  • Cant look at the 3D on my work computer, infact for some reason I cant get on the event website to print of the map now image

I reckon I am defo gonna do this one, i have just emailed them to check I am ok to sign up on the day image  I understand its short notice for you Silver and of course your commitments are alot more hectic

Well I went out with the other running group last night 'Run England' in Daventry and I enjoyed it so much image lovely bunch of people of all abilities and fortunately another new lady started who even better ran at my pace image I will defo be joining them every Weds when I can get to them on time (5.15 start) they only do about 45 mins so around 5-6K but the good thing is they change it every week so do hill and speed work.

Supposedly out with Daventry Road Runners tonight but need to phone later to see who is running.  I think the way I feel is, I will join both clubs and do one night a week with each or if I feel upto it both nights with DRR, its a harder run with them though and 7pm start which is not ideal

  • Hey Boo. I'm out architecting in London today so just checking in on phone between meetings.

The Buckingham run looks great so I'm gutted I can't make it but family duties come first. The 3d thing is worth a look if you get to see it as it flues you round the course and shows you where the hills are. Didn't know you could do all that with Google maps.

I was thinking of trying a local RE club if I can find one on a Thurs or Fri so I can do this with the club run on Tuesday. I'm not sure how well by legs will stand up to 5/6 miles twice a week with only a days rest but I'll give it a go. It beats sitting at home watching rubbish tele while my wife plays on Facebook all night!

I know what you mean about fitting the running in around other things. I started running at lunchtime as it was the only clear hour I had during the day. I have an hours drive each way to the office so unless I run late on it's difficult. Do you work 9 to 5 and have to drive to work too as 5.15 is an early start?

The 7.30 start the other night suited me fine but it means the kids miss the pleasure of my story telling so I can't do it more than a couple of times a week. I'm also starving by the tome I get back so I'm not sure my stomach would thank me.

Anyway best of luck with the 10k if you do go for it. I'll be thinking of you as I stand watching 8 7 year olds chasing a ball round a field! Hopefully we can meet at another event in the near future.

Sorry about the typos. Big fingers little keyboard I'm afraid!
  • I am really lucky and work flexi time.  My drive to work is about 20 mins, I always start at 8 as I miss traffic that way then I finish anytime I want as long as I have accrued hours and my boss is ok with it.  There is only the 2 of us in our dept. so if my boss is off or wants to go early I have to stay till 5 otherwise the majority of time I will finish earlier.  Its really great to be honest as it also allows me to accrue an extra 12 days holiday a year image

Daventry where both running clubs are are about a 10min drive from home so if I can finish work say 4.30ish every weds then I can make the 5.15 run.  The other club on tues and thurs is 7pm so you can prob see why I hate hanging about till then

And as you can prob guess I post on here when I am at work image and rarely go on the computer at home, hence the no posts evenings and weekends and dont use my phone for internet image

I have no idea what some of these faces mean image but I no I am an image hahaha image

  • Flexi-time sounds great esp if you accrue hols too. 12 extra days a year must be wonderful I wouldn't know what to do with them but I'd like to have that problem! We are 9 to 5.30 but my job takes me out to site a lot of the time which I love. It's good having a few days in the office but I get itchy feet if I can't get out for a while.

My drive is against the traffic going into London so it's not difficult but I have to say there are some days when I wish I could do it in 5mins. Other days it's a good chance to wind down after all the stress in the office.

I really should run this evening but I'm not sure I fancy a lap of the village in the dark on my own. I would love a treadmill and almost bought one when I started but that didnt go down well at home so I scrapped the idea. I may reconsider now the nights are drawing in though. Maybe I can hide it in the garage!

I know what you mean with the smileys. I spend more time trying to work out what they mean and deciding which one to use than I do writing the message! As I'm on my phone I can't use them do this will have to do for now image.
  • I have a treadmill, I bought it off a work colleague for £50 its a few years old but hardly used, It fits snuggly in our little study.  When I got it back in May I used it loads thats when I quit the gym and joined this forum.  This lot on here then encouraged me to get out roadrunning so its not used as much now but I know its going to be useful in the winter months.  If you have room for one I would defo get one they are handy when you cant be bothered to venture out and also good for some speed work image but nothing beats the great outdoors

Am off soon, still not sure if I am club running tonight  so catch you 2moz, have a good evening image

  • Things like this make me feel much better about turning 40!

    http://trainingdaily.runnersworld.com/2011/10/13/50-is-the-new-20/?cm_mmc=Twitter-_-RunnersWorld-_-Content-Blog-_-TrainingDaily50new20

No run tonight as I forgot I was babysitting for my broth in law so I'm going to wind myself up for another lunchtime 7k tomorrow if the weather stays good!

Did you get out with club this evening Boo? How did it go?

  • What a beautiful morning. Can't wait to get out later today. I love this time of year image
  • Hey dont worry about turning 40, I am 44 in a couple of weeks image

Had a great club run last night, just me and two ladies I had not met before and we all ran at the same pace which was great image I could even hold a conversation haha so my mind is made up, I join both clubs and run whenever I can with who I can each week image feel better now thats all sorted, I was a tad nervous but then I am never one to shy away from such things image nothing ventured ah image

This morning truly was a beautiful one, loads of mist over the fields here with the sun behind it.  I even did a 'wow look at that' out loud in the car haha

So Silver are you up for the 7K today image I hope so image

Defo doing the Bucks 10K, had email, no probs joining on the day image

  • 40 is a distant memory for me Boo. I'm now 41 turning 42 in a few months. I struggled with passing that landmark but I feel fitter now than I did 10 even 20 years ago so I'm not worried about the physical side of things. It's just the memory that goes a bit oh and my hair is almost all grey now thus the nickname Silvertop. better grey than gone as they say though!

Well done on the run yesterday sounds like it's all coming together for you. If I can just line up another weekly run I can also mix and match when I go out and who with.

It's still a fantastic day here so looking good for my 7k at lunchtime.

The drive in up the M40 this morning was stunning. Postcard views everywhere. Just wanted to stop and get my trainers on but my desk was calling me! Don't worry though just an hour and a half before I escape for an hour.
  • I think we should re-name this thread the 'Silver & Boo Chatroom & sometimes Suzie' haha

If every you feel like jumping into another thread the 'help support & Inspiration' thread is one I use alot.  These are the people that have helped me from the beginning and a nice little community of us.  One of the chaps, Mykey, keeps a running list of all our races we are entering which is cool image go on don't me shy *shoves silver in there* image

I like our chats in here though so lets keep this going image

  • I like our chats so I won't be going anywhere! I've never been one for chat rooms or Facebook but I can see how they can be addictive if you are speaking to someone you get on with. image If anyone else wants to join in they are more than welcome (Suzie?) but in the meantime it's up to us to keep the thread alive!

I have tried a couple of other threads but don't seem to get much feedback but withnthe help of your shove I will step into your other home later to see what people are saying.

Off tuning in 20 mins so need to gety kit on. Cant wait althoughay just do 5k as Im starving snd need time to eat after. Speak to you later.

  • Happy tuning image haha image image its ok I know what you meant
  • Sorry I meant 'support advice and inspiration' thread image
  • Tuning - not sure how that got there - stupid IPhone autospell me thinks!

Well beautiful day, beautiful weather but dreadful run. I just couldn't get my breathing right and my legs felt like lead. I ended up walking for near enough 5mins after 3.5k. Ran the last 1k faster to make up for it but I'm well disappointed.

I think the 10k running with the club on Tuesday took more out of me than I realised as I think I ran faster to keep up. Either that or I just haven't eaten enough the last 2 days as I've been running around and I just didn't have the energy!

It's a bit of a set back as I thought Id made the step up to 7 k and even 10k but maybe I'm not ready yet afterall.

I think I'll spend the weekend recovering rather than pushing myself once more when I'm tired. I have a w/e full of family duties so it will be tiring enough as it is.

Oh well onwards and upwards! I enjoyed the walk in the middle actually got a chance to look around more than usual.
  • Hi there,

Hope you don't mind me joining in your thread but it seemed a lot less intimidating than some of the others which seem to have been going forever.

I have been well and truly bitten by the running bug having starting jogging on a treadmill in May to try to get a bit fitter and lose some weight.

Eventually plucked up the courage to go outside in mid August and have had a run every other day since then.

I've steadily built up whilst trying to follow a plan I found on the net for someone training for their first ever 10k.

Things have gone pretty well with only the odd hiccup but the 10k that I entered in my hometown is this Sunday and I'm getting more and more nervous as the day approaches!

  • Hey don't beat yourself up, you went out and ran didn't you image

Remember this time last week when I was feeling totally drained and tried to do the ressy run image ran half walked the rest and felt rubish about it image not to mention the whole keys and smashing window episode image  It happens to us all

Everything you have mentioned is exactly what I felt, running club and not eating right etc etc

Have a total rest this weekend from running, I am always surprised how much it helps.  I remember recently having a rest for 4 days and thinking how lazy I was then went out and did my first 10K on my own image

Go into the weekend feeling good that you actually went out today and ran image < I hope you are smiling now image

  • Hi Stripes,

No problem joining in.  I also found the other threads a bit much with the same people using them all the time so I've come to rest here with other like minded and less intimidating souls!

You started not long after myself (April) and seem to be at a similar point now - working up to 10k.  In fact if you are running 10k this weekend you are probably ahead of me.

Wheres your local race?  Its not the Buckingham one is it. I was desperate to enter this one but just can't make it.

I find everyone supportive on here so keep posting and let us know how you get on.  Oh!, and of course, the best of luck for Sunday.

  • Thanks Booey - you always manage to cheer me up.  Your support is mucho appreciated as always!

I just hate walking as I feel a bit of a Div in running gear looking like Im just out for a stroll!  Got a couple of funny looks from the dog walkers but what the hell - its a one off.

If you are doing your flexi-time thing and finishing early today have agreat weekend and good luck for the Buckingham 10k.  Not sure what I'm going to do this weekend without someone to talk to on here - may have to explore the other threads.  Gulp! image

  • Thanks a lot Silvertop,

It is in Tamworth in Staffordshire.

Hoping that I'm prepared for it physically as I've tried to increase the distances I've run fairly slowly and managed to run almost 10k in my last long(well long for me) run last Sunday.

Its more the mental part that worries me, not knowing the way things work, being intimidated by faster proper runners, falling in the canal image

I've had experiences similar to yours today,  I had to stop just after half way through a 4 mile run a couple of weeks ago and it left me really demoralised but went out two days later and I was okay again.

Not sure what happened but guess my body was trying to tell me something.

Sure you will be fine after the weekend.

  • Stripes - welcome to our cosy forum thread image please join us, Silver and I and Suzie when she cares to pop in welcome you image

Is your 10K Buckingham? say yes say yes image thats the one I am doing.  Don't be nervous you will love it, I well and truly have the racing bug and would do one every weekend if I could

Silver - glad you feeling better image and stuff the dog walkers haha

I was just pondering what time to leave image very soon hopefully, so you have a great weekend also and send me good vipes for Sunday image  I may well pop on tomorrow as I need to look at the map for sunday, I cant seem to get onto the race organisers website from work image

    *waves*  cya

  • OH dam Stripes I though I might have a racing buddy for a minute imageimage
  • Hi Booey,

    Thanks a lot.

    Hope your race goes well.

Will report back on mine on Monday.

  • Stripes - I felt very nervous about my first club run on Tuesday but it wasn’t anything to worry about and I managed to keep up with the average runners in the middle of the group ok.  I have to say everyone I have met on this forum and at the club has been nothing but supportive which has made it very easy to fit in.  Running seems to be a sport which unites people rather than divides them which is why I like it – that and the other reasons that have been mentioned above.

I share your trepidation as I’m quite shy in these situations myself but I’m sure you will be fine once you get there and even better once you start running as there’s not a lot that can go wrong from that point – unless you really do fall in the canal!

If nothing else think to yourself that you have to do it so you can report back here on Monday.  It was the thought of telling Booey that I had chickened out of the club run on Tuesday that made me go through with it!  We’ll be expecting a report before mid-day on Monday!

  • Will do. You will laugh but I've already got my kit ready and my number pinned to my T-Shirt!

I am out all day tomorrow at football but won't be drinking because of Sunday so will get plenty of stick from my mates no doubt image

I had a look at the website of my local running club after reading your thread but I'm not sure I'm quite ready for such a big step yet.

If Sunday goes okay I may give it more thought.

Have you been for a fitting at a local specialist running shop? I am currently wearing £40 chain sports shop trainers which seem fine to me but reading some of the stuff on here has got me worrying that I am making a mistake by carrying on in them.

  • Hey Stripes. I think entering a race is more daunting than a running club. Once youve done the race sure you'll feel confident enough to look at a club. Have you done any Parkruns? They are very relaxed and a good chance to run with other people. To be honest if I could get to my local one every Sat morning I'd don't know I would bother with the club but family stuff Means 9am on Sat is difficult.

I bought some pretty good Nike trainers when I started out but I noticed that as I increased the miles my knees and ankles started to really hurt and my inner thigh muscles were in agony. My plan was to have a gait analysis done and get new trainers but as a stopgap I bought some good running insoles and replaced the Nike ones for these. What a difference they made! I haven't had the pains once since I started using them. If you are starting to up the mikes and enter races I would def get some proper running shoes and have the analysis done too if the running shop will do this for free.

Boo I was looking at treadmills online and came across this. Its prob how my first go will look.

  • Well I am all carbed up ready for 2moz image I cant wait I am so excited, Stripes you will love the race believe me and just want to do more and more to beat your times image

My bag is packed ready also, but then its always ready to be honest

I went to Sweatshop for my runners as I knew they did gait analysis.  I went to the MK Shop and they were so helpful, I tried a few different ones on and they got me running up and down the shop to watch how I ran.  I came away with a pair of Asics £55 in the sale and I can honestly say they have been perfect since that day, no rubs blisters nothing.  Oh and don't forget to go up a size, this is normal for running as your feel expand.

Silver - hope your day is going good, I will try and give my race report 2moz night if not monday

  • Thanks both for the advice. Will go get a gait analysis done at the closest specialist shop to me, will have to wait until I've got some spare cash though!

Silver, I looked at the Park Run website after seeing it mentioned on here but there isn't one close to me. The closest one is over half an hour drive away and like you Saturday morning isn't really very good for me. I'm either working or getting ready to go to a football match.

I started out on a treadmill before I dared go outside, they are handy to have for really bad weather and from what I've read they are useful for speedwork(not sure I'll ever get to that stage image ) but boy are they dull. I got up to over half an hour on it but not sure I could ever take much more.

Boo, enjoy your race. Thanks for the encouragement. Getting more nervous as it gets closer!

  • Hi All,

    Well I did it!

Very nervous this morning but had slept okay when I eventually managed to drop off.

Had a banana for breakfast which was maybe a mistake image  had to pop into work on short drive to the start which turned out to be a blessing!

Was quite cold so kept my jacket on after parking up and went for a walk to the start area to see how things worked.

Found the start, felt very intimidated by all the serious looking runners so went back to car, got rid of jacket and did some stretches in the car park.

Got back near the start but didn't want to stand still so just kept walking around, with a couple of very short jogs, to try to keep the cold at bay.

When everyone got called in to the start I positioned myself near the back, I noticed I was one of the only men this far back image

We were off before I knew it, think it was a couple of minutes early and kind of took me by surprise but I felt comfortable almost straight away once I realised I wasn't surrounded by Olympic quality athletes and soon settled into a rhythm.

Breathing felt good and as this was my first race I hadn't realised how much help it is having so many people around you.

My plan was to start slowly since my main aim was to finish, and the only vague aim I had timewise was to get under an hour.

Went through the first km in about 5.30 and felt great. Was passing lots of people and started using them as targets and also started to appreciate how you can latch onto someone and be towed along.

Didn't see the 2km marker and managed to forget to check my time at 3km but still felt I was taking it very steady.

Where I live means that all my training runs involve what I think is a fairly steep hill on the way home but this course was as flat as a pancake so when we finished the first lap I was still feeling great and was happy to go through 5km in about 27minutes.

When we reached the canal section the second time I was confident that unless I did something really silly I woud finish so I started to pick up my pace and latched onto the back of one guy who was overtaking lots of people.

All went swimmingly well, so much so that I went past my pacemaker and maybe started to push too much as I started to struggle a bit inside the last km.

Was relieved to see the finish line come into view but it spurred me on and managed to produce a little bit of a sprint finish(by my standards I must add image)

Finished in about 51 minutes I think. Was so tired I forgot to hit the stop on my watch!

Got water, energy drink, banana and a nice Paperweight as a momento.

Walked around to try to warm down and then went along the finishing straight to cheer people crossing the line.

All in all it was a great experience, I am still buzzing as I write this and Booey you were right, I can't wait to do another one!

  • Hi Stripes. Thats a great post. It gives a great insight into your race experience - nerves, anxiety and all. And 51mins is a great time too. I would be happy with a sub 60min 10k on my first outing or any outing for that matter.

Interesting you got a paperweight too. I'm sure Booey mentioned them in her goodie bags. Not sure what the connection is with running but I'm sure it will take pride of place on your desk tomorrow!

I've had an unproductive weekend in running terms but my 7 year old scored the winning goal in his first footie match today so I'm dead chuffed at that. He got some new boots as a reward (he needed some anyway) so he's made up.

I've also eaten a load of rubbish food over the weekend which annoys me as I can feel the pounds coming back on. Problem is when you are running around and at parties it's difficult to eat well.

Anyway I'm going to have a lean day tomorrow so I can go to the club run on Tuesday and keep up like last week. I must get my head round the new regime and change in weather and get some enthusiasm back this week.

The next two weekends are footie free due to half term so I will have a look to see if there are any races coming up I can enter.

    Well done again.
