  • I checked earlier and it hadn't been updated. Has it now???
  • Only 350 or so places left image (Sorry for the crappy emotey - thanks Chrome)
  • Well the emotey was crap when I input it...

Well ive decided (image) not to do Abo this year.... as I type this I am still not 100% sure but I think one marathon a year is enough for me! So London is the one. I could change my mind by tomorrow. Better decide soon with the etries filling fast!

  • I am in. I just posted my entry with cash enclosed as I don't have a chequebook.

I will always have fond memories of this race as it is where I ran my first sub 3, back in 2010. If Comrades goes according to plan (for once), a 2:39 at Abingdon will make me very happy with 2012.

  • Just entered. This will be abo number 4 for me after a year off for a baby. Last one in 2010 was my dream marathon when I broke 4 hours (just!). Reading all your posts has got me so excited. Great description Fido. Just captured it totally!
  • To add to Fido2dogs description here's the route from my race last year:

The 2 loop part is the lower/bigger loop.I think I've got the list of where all the water stations were which I'll look out too.  I'm not running it this year but will be marshalling it again hopefully at my usual spot just after mile 3

  • Hmm seem to be loads of marathons next autumn, (Liverpool, Preston, Mablethorpe, Chester plus a few good overseas ones) not sure wether to do this or another one.
  • Hello everyone, I would urge anyone wavering on whether to enter Abingdon Marathon to do so now.  You won't regret it - and don't forget, if you change your mind there is generally a waiting list so I think you can withdraw by the end of June and there'll be a pretty much guaranteed taker for your place.

This a great event and I thoroughly enjoyed running it last year.   For first timers it's a great introduction to marathons. OK, it doesn't have the big city crowds of VLM and the like, but it's very friendly and welcoming and, therefore, not too scary.  For those who have run marathons before and looking for a PB, then this is THE race to do.

I won't be running this year (training for two marathons last year takes it toll on my body) but I've volunteered to marshal so I'll be cheering you all on and dipping into this forum now and again.

    Good luck everyone !!

  • I agree with Chalgrove Chubster- its a great race with fantastic organisation and dead flat.  But I understand that there won't be an official waiting list this year so even more reason to get your entry in ASAP.  Only 160 places left....I'll be marshalling it this year too.
  • Looks like it's full already. Agree with everyone above - it's my favourite marathon (and not just cos it's local!) The supporters are amazing, the course is fast and attractive, the organisation flawless and the T-shirts are fab. What more could you want? See you all there!
  • Possibly not quite full.  I think 1100 numbers are given out, with the presumption that several hundred don't turn up for it.  The website said 1031 places had gone by 16/2, although allowing for the delay in postal entries, it may well be up to 1100 now!
  • Gutted to miss out, after running a PB here three years ago and just getting back on my feet following injury. If there is an unofficial waiting list this year- can I put my name on it. Thanks Jonathan
  • Yes there is an official waiting list this year again. Check out the website
  • I'm in. Will be my first marathon GULP!
  • Well - you'll be able to train over the summer, which is a big plus!
So where do you think you'll be marshalling, Old Shadowfax? Mile 3 is in the middle of the Radley Lakes cyclepath, I would have thought there would be marshalls either a bit before (where it turns off from Thrupp Lane) or a bit after (at the bend, or where it comes out on Barton Lane later on). But I guess there is no limit to the extent that confused runners can disappear off into the countryside...
  • two back to back 16 milers on the last two days in prep for my spring marathon have me excited I am on track and I am looking forward to try and PB in this one.....

im begining B2Bs too AGF...theres going to be a heck of a lot of early mornings for me over summerimage

  • Fido- in previous years I've marshalled at the eastern end of the Sustrans path which means i can whizz off on my bike to Preston road and see the runners come through on the 1st lap and then whizz back to TP to see the finish.  I did once marshal on the High street opposite the old post office.  just tooo scary to do it again!

I have suggested to our parkrun obergruppenfuhrer that perhaps the Abingdon parkrun might like to man one of the drinks stations.  We could put up the banner and so promote parkrun at the same time.

  • Evening all - I keep having a look in! Gutted I won't be doing it but get London done this year and may be back next year! For a PB! Hope everyones training is going well.
  • It's all gone a bit quiet in here... cobwebs everywhere...

Very bad news for me unfortunately. I have now not been able to run since last November and after a couple of MRI scans my Orthopaedic doctor has very strongly advised me to retire from running (and squash, and all sports that could involve impact or shearing movements to my legs) to try to avoid imminent knee surgery.

I will be taking his advice and hanging up my shoes... for good.

Will be forever gutted that I was unable to break the magical 4 hour mark by only a couple of minutes but have really enjoyed the challenge.

Would like to say au revior but sadly it's good-bye.

    Sorry to hear that S.u.l.
When I see the kayakers and rowers and scuba divers and cyclists out I'll think of you.
  • Best wishes scudulike. I followed your progress in Berlin and Abingdon last year. You gave it your best shot and can be proud.

Have fun on your new adventures...be it cycling or whatever... image
  • Hi scudulike, sorry to hear your news, but would you reconsider if a different doctors opinion said otherwise. Fortunately my GP's wife is a runner, so he has always been supportive. I had an MRI last summer which showed meniscal tears, loose cartilage & a cyst. Finally had op yesterday & have been told by consultant & physio that i should be able to try a gentle (supervised) treadie run in about 6 wks.
    Take care, Jo.
  • Scudulike- that's really bad news, but I'd agree with Joe.
  • Scud - you should def get an opinion from a sports interested orthopaedic guy (unless you already have ??). It may well be that you could embark on a very careful supervised programme of starting to run again rather than calling it a day now.

    All the best

  • Many thanks for all of the supportive comments chaps. Unfortunately the Ortho doctor is a sports specialist.

I too have meniscal tears on both knees and compartment syndrome in my right calf.

It is the compartment syndrome that is truly murderous - Last November could not run 1 mile before being in tears with the pain.

I AM only deferring my VLM place for this year so if something miraculous happens over the summer there's always a guaranteed spot in the VLM 2013!!!

Am trying to be sensible though.

  • HI Scudulike

Wife has compartment syndrome - OUCH!  SOrry to hear it.  Apparently only surgery removes it too.  SO sorry to hear this

  • Hello everyone, i've been reading through this thread and am running this race in October.

First of all, best wishes to you Scudulike on your future, well done for what you've acheived with running, hopefully you'll find another discipline that you'll enjoy as much.

Tried to get in this race last year but it was full so quickly, i got in early this time!

Sounds like a flat type of course, and after just running the Selsdon Half last Sat i'm very pleased about that!

I've run 7 marathons before (4 London, Prague, Angelsey and Halstead) but had a knee op last year so missed out on a marathon. Haven't cracked 'the last 5-6 miles' yet, but hoping to be stronger this time.

Training through the summer may be tough if it's too hot, BUT i'm hoping that will make the 'cooler' race conditions easier, that's the plan anyway!

Hope everyones training is going well

    Steve
