Hi all
I have finally decided on a bike (Giant Defy 5) this is after being warned off anything cheaper and having a really small budget. Ive been to 2 local bike shops and been told i need a different size in each. One said a Med another med/large.
I know by reading the forums people say it is what fits best but to be honest ive never ridden a roadbike and they all feel uncomfy to the same level.
The bike willbe used for a few duathlons/tri's ive entered. Also for 14m each way work commutes each day. (ive been doing it on an old mountain bike till now.
Iam 5ft 8 1/2. Weigh 12st have a 32 inside leg.
Any helpwelcome so i can finally take the plunge.
also a completenoob thing - will the roadbike really make that much difference to my mountain bike time over 14miles?

I think I am a similar height to you, few lbs lighter, same leg length et.c, but its the top tube length that you should really be looking at and yes, which one feels better
I believe (and I expect someone to correct me if I am wrong) but it is easier to make a bike bigger if you get the wrong size than it is to make one smaller
Completely new to this what does a proper bike set up mean?
The one shop that said a medium did comment i would have to have the saddle 'high'. I have a 34inch inside leg Floor to groin so this may be why the other went M/L?
Looking at the Giant sizing charts i fit in a M for height and a M/L for inseide leg. Really frustrating as every time i go to get the bike i get a little more confused
So... definately not the M/L. You'll be too stretched out.
