A MEMORIAL race will be held for a young athlete who died while out running due to a heart valve defect.

Joe Parkinson, a BT engineer, was just 21 when the tragedy occurred on an evening run in February this year.

His father, Joey Parkinson Senior, is hoping to raise awareness of such problems in young athletes and generate enough money to install defibrillators at Wavertree Athletics Centre and Mossley Hill Athletics Club, where junior football matches also take place.

“This sort of heart problem is common and doesn’t discriminate from young or fit people,” he said.

“It happens a lot but there is not much awareness.”

He added: “Through this race and other charity nights we are hoping to raise enough money for two defibrillators.

“We’ll call them ‘Joe One’ and ‘Joe Two’ so that they have a friendlier name.”

By increasing awareness of the issue and encouraging parents to try and identify such problems in their children it is hoped that the likelihood of similar tragedies can be reduced.

THE special race will be held at the Wavertree Mystery Park at 7.15pm on Tuesday, May 1.

At five kilometres it will be suitable for anybody to take part and support a worthy and important cause.
