2 pairs of shoes on the go at once

Having realised that I've clocked about 450 miles on my first ever running shoes I decided to get a new pair. I duly did this at a decent running shop where I got properly assessed etc. However, I forked out the full RRP for the shoes (less a discount voucher I had). They're Asics Gel-Cumulus 13 if that makes any odds.

As I'm back in training for my second half marathon later this year I reckon I'll be doing a lot of miles quite soon in the new trainers so am contemplating buying the same shoe (different colour) from Amazon about £40 cheaper.

I'd be interested to know if others buy two (or more) pairs at once, and whether there's any reason not to buy from Amazon - given I know the shoe fits.

Why wouldn't you?  I'd feel morally obliged to buy a pair of shoes if I used the services of a specialist shop in order to make the initial assessment, but after that you're merely a well informed consumer.  Shops obviously have higher overheads than online stores so prices are always going to be generally higher, but all the more reason to get the value-added services such as gait analysis, or just trying on, only when you need them.

I have 4 pairs on the go 2 with 300 miles on them and 2 with less than 50 miles on them!!!

    I agree with PhilPub. Once I knew what shoes "worked" for me - i've bought pairs from Wiggle, Amazon etc. I'd always get the gait analysed at first but as you say "if the shoe fits"! There's are lots of stores you can use - but just make sure that when you order it's the correct size (e.g. not just size 7.5 but is the width correct?). This was a mistake that I made - I ordered one pair that were the right size but the wrong width;

I get my gait reanalysed once every 12/18 months dependent upon what i've been doing. When I broke my leg it was more frequent as my style of running changed but now i'm more static - I do it.

It's also always good practice to have 2 pairs of shoes on the go. One for your longer runs and one for your shorter ones.

i got 4 shoes on the go at the mo. but will reduce to three and not replenish just yet.

agree, i always by my shoes at the shop if i had a gait analysis - think it is right to do so. but after that, i get them where i find a deal on.
  • i have a few pairs, a light weight pair for shorter runs and race day as well as my nimbus for day to day mileage, then some trailshoes,

when its time to change my nimbus (or whatever my backbone mileage shoes are at the time) i usually have a cross over of about 100/200 miles, especially if i'm changing the shoe.
  • Cormorant - if you're happy with your shoes definitely buy a few more pairs online - I just did exactly what you're asking about, same shoes as well! I paid £90 for Cumulus 13s instore and £54 on eBay. I've found eBay great for trainers with loads of folk selling unwanted gifts or shoes that ahve been worn once but didn't fit right. I got a brand new pair of Cumulus 11s for £25 last year. Just make sure that you're getting the right size, some folk neglect to mention whether they're selling mens or womens ones and some people get confused with US and UK sizing...

Thanks all. I agree with the "doing the right thing" about buying from the shop that did the gait analysis. The pain was lessened by a 15% voucher anyway (which oviously they were giving away to attract my custom in the first place).

I'll wait for the next pay cheque and pay the internet a visit!

I have 3 pairs on the go ATM. I too wear the Asic Cumulus Gel 13, and have done for a good few years-- I tried the next model down and they gave me blisters. I get mine from Start Fitness, which are excellent and cheap, and the last pair were £55 which was a bargain. They're on at £60 ATM here http://www.startfitness.co.uk/product.asp?strParents=&CAT_ID=&P_ID=44283 with free P&P
(I don't work for them, honest!)
Also some on here loathe them, but Sports Direct do good deals on Asics from time to time.

Ta, I'll have a look at that.
  • Erm... I have 4 pairs of shoes on the go... for the trails..

...and 5 or 6 pairs for roads....

    I think I win!

    Yeah I know I'm a shoe freak...

They include a variety though, some vibrams, some other barefoot shoes, some normal trainers, some with better grip some with worse grip...

    And I love them all!

  • Oh and I always buy cheapest place I can find online or sports direct if they have what I'm looking for.
