  • Good luck Oscarr, Rosie & Rachel for Marathon of the North!  It isn't warm but probably ideal marathon running conditions.

SB - I quite fancy a go at a Duathlon (is that a link to one above?)...I don't have a great bike tho - it' a 20 year old mountain bike that I've put road tyres on!  Not sure how good I'd be at proper road biking, don't much fancy the clips and the riding position looks v uncomfortable.  I've been told by friends who are into triathlons that there's no point in my buying a hybrid tho and need to decide road vs mountain.  What do you have?

Still no running here, went to gym and on cross trainer and some planks.  If heel is ok after cross trainer I'll know it's getting there and might risk a jog round the 10k on Monday.  Not run for 6 days now - longest for well over 2 years!!!!

  • The long link is to a directory of duathlons.  Bike wise - I have both a road bike and mountain bike (I used to do a lot of time trialling when I was young so having bikes around is normal for me though neither of them are all that flash these days).  You'd be fine on a hybrid in some of the shorter (beginners) races though so you can always decide once you've had a go.  Just don't expect to be too fast but if like me you're only taking it semi-seriously and using it more for training / fun you'll be fine!  Riding position wise - you'd be surprised how comfortable tri - bars are once you get used to them.  Beginner event wise - I'd be thinking something like one of the following, depending on where you are:

    May - West Pinchbeck (3k / 10k / 3k)
    July - Milford (2.4/11.3/2.4)
September - Richmond (Fun or Challenge distance?) (5/10/5 or 10/20/5)
November - Robin Hood - (5/16/3)- off road!

    Glad you're on the mend...image

  • Exciting - my Iron Man physio told me ebay is good for second hand bikes but I think you need to be sure what size frame you need and no idea how to go about that (and whether it is different for road bikes to hybrids.  Any particular hybrids you'd recommend SB?

Quite fancy the off road one - I'm just north of London so Richmond could also be good, I used to live in Putney so know it well......

  • Hey WW - I know - I'm really looking forward to next year (though I want to get some miles in first!)

Have a look at this (should answer your sizing questions):

    http://www.evanscycles.com/help/bike-sizing

I'm no expert on hybrids sorry - I have a spare pair of wheels with slick tyres on for my mountain bike which is a mid-range Scott.  It does the job quite nicely - I  doubt I'll ever be taking my biking as seriously as I used to and even then I confess, I was a bit of a girl and my dad enjoyed feeling involved and tinkering about pretending he was a mechanic.  I'm a firm supporter of bike shops I'm afraid - they're worth every penny!

It's a shame I swim like a brick and hate water really - duathlons only for me!

    image

  • I built a bike up from a mountain bike carbon frame for off road, a hard tail.......any questions send them my way WW though you cant beat the local bike shops the older the better with the real pro mechanics it, avoid most H'fords stores.  I now have a Specialised Secateur Road bike which I bought on the Cycle to Work scheme which enables you to buy a bike dead cheap on the HP and save on the tax and NI. I persuaded the company I work for to do it. The first time the large company 60 years old with 20000 employees had ever done it..................... Off to check out the duathlons.  Soon be Sunday ooooohhhhh excitement mounting........... have a super weekend all. Time to do some work. Like this new styleee.........image

  • Hey MCS I used to work as a mechanic in Olympic Cycles in Nottingham during my Uni days and agree with you totally, find your local bike shop, get to know them and the use them for all you need, they will do a deal to, plus they will help with set-up etc. it does remind me I should try a duathlon sometime!

Good luck Oscarr, you will do it, the training is done, the will is there...you are ready, the most important thing is to enjoy it

Oh good lord. Away for an evening doing non-running related stuff and look what happens... They change the website...
  • Non running related running stuff sounds exciting!! Nine miles done today on rest day oops taking on the Rosie mantle in her absence. Rest day now Saturday then run Sunday, just five aside footie tonight promised to play in goal so less chance of injury!

mcs: was running a election campaign room and then attending the count. Interesting evening.

I've got a Raligh hybrid. Does the job for getting to the train station but gearing is very low for somewhere vvv flat.

Good luck for the race Oscarr, and everybody else running this weekend!

I'm not carbo-loading, but still ate a large plate of Spaghetti Bolognese tonight image

I watched my son(5) play football in his new studded boots tonight, and he scored five goals image.  He scores more in a single game than I've scored in a lifetime!

  • Thanks for all the good luck wishes everyone and good luck to anyone else racing this weekend - about to set off for the north east so won't be on here now until Monday night.

    Good luck!!! Sub 4, Sub 4, Sub 4, Sub 4, Sub 4, Sub 4, Sub 4, Sub 4!!!!
  • You might not get this before the race Oscar but GOOD LUCK. It sounds aaa thought you have prepared very well physically and mentally so I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you for sub 4!! Hourly I can make the 4:30 - 4:45 mark!!

Good luck to all running this weekend. As Sam would say must 'reframe' these early nerves into excitement. ARGH!!!!
  • Hi everyone! Am just packing for triathlon camp in Greece - setting off tonight but just wanted to say a quick but hearfelt good luck to Oscarr for his marathon this weekend - great prep, Oscarr and hope it goes to plan on the day. And also, according to this thread, good luck to our own crazy Rosie! And to Rachel. Hope you all have a great race and the weather is better than for Ten's race last weekend.

Hoping for better weather out in Greeceimage Back in a week!

  • TenjisoTenjiso ✭✭✭

    Have fun in greece, Sam!

  • As promised ... News just in from Danish half marathon (for those who don't know - OH made his debut today in an England vest whoop whoop):

He came 4th with a new pb of 65.58 (OMG - trust me - I know!!!!) He was first England team member home.  Heartbroken that he missed out on the podium but bursting with pride at the same time.

Hope everyone has similarly exciting races this weekend! Go Go Go

  • TenjisoTenjiso ✭✭✭

That's outstanding SB!!!!!!!  Congratulations to your OH - what a stunning debut!

I'm gobsmacked by that time - more like a 10k time for me image

  • BoDukeBoDuke ✭✭✭
Go Ben!!!! Well done to him, what a stonking time!!!
  • Thanks guys! Just missed out on the podium but it gives him a reason to keep training! Next time ...

Ten, look at it more this way - if you keep training you'll get faster!  It's worked for him and keeps continuing to - there's hope for us all to improve!

You two still eating everything in sight?  I had a lovely 10 mile run with the club this morning - followed by a pub lunch and some birthday cake and going out for another 10 tomorrow just to keep my weekly mileage up!  (Have long sleeve tops back out - flippin' weather).

Hope the marathoners are all settling down for the evening... jaffa cakes at the ready... let the snacking begin!

The post marathon week seems to drag on!  Which is my excuse for the fact that I didn't make it to the end of the week before doing my first run image  I was feeling a bit stir crazy.

I started with the intention of running an easy two miles, extended it to three, then four.  I did, however, wear my heart rate monitor to ensure it remained below my recovery ceiling.  I feel better now for having done it, and hope it stays that way.

  • Wow congrats to Ben fantastic time!!

watching fa cup eating tacos with rice too in readiness for lsr!

Go oscarr GO and Rosie if she is lurking too. Should now hit fifty miles tomorrow all being well as did a few extra to keep the legs turning after footie last night. Scored a couple of cracking goals if I say so myself.

Have a good holiday break Sam in the sun. Sis in law loves your book by the way.
  • SB - wow your OH is an elite athlete?!  That is an amazing PB - can't begin to calculate the avg pace as am sure it would be too scary.  My 10 mile PB is 75 minutes!!!!!

Lots of bike experts on here - good to know - may well tap into that knowledge shortly.  Going to have to live with my current bike for tomorrow's 30 miles and next sunday's 40 tho methinks!

Did mile swim and bit of a cycle this morning.  Love the fresh feeling a swim gives you and also feel like my 'swimming fitness' improves quickly when I start back.  Was (secretly) racing the chap in the next lane......

Ten - if you felt ready to run I'm sure that was the right thing to do!

Sam - I have bought your book for 2 good friends for their birthdays, so two new fans following your plan....

mcs how can you play footie on top of a 50 mile week?

My heel feeling 100% now but bit scared to test it running.  Thinking I might just go for the 10k monday and take it v easy, even walk if it feels sore.  It's been pain free for 2+ days now.  Do you think that sounds like a reasonable strategy?

    Happy bank hol weekend all!

  • Hi all just had a mad 9 day stint at work and had no time to keep up.

Sorry to have missed Oscarr, my money is on 3:56

Ten I was so impressed with your gutsy handling of the conditions at MK - awesome.

WW I was going to suggest aqua jogging as usual but I guess I'll see you on Monday at the buebell run!  Have had a bit of hip niggle [whole new site], and have only run once since VLM [track session 10 x 400s inc a PB!]

SB - congratulations to OH Ben!  I just watched my hurdler mate win £50 000 on the Cube just now as I was reading through, wow!

Sam - have a fab tme in Greece, it is sweet to be back running - know the feeling [about 3 times a year usually]

A lot of my usual summer races local to here have been postponed due to the Olympics, so I am not doing a half until Hackney Marshes [UF Dance] in September, have 4 10Ks lined up meanwhile - Watford, Stockley Park, Bupa 10 000, Concorde.

Needless to say I'll be starting to have a look for new events now that I've heard from you all again.

  • HI everyone - sorry work has been horrendous and also I hven't been running very much so feeling fat and lazy. Kind of lost my drive really image.

Think I need some guidence/bossing and advice for Sam (any anyone else who has some). I've got a 10 mile race tomorrow (of the back of no trainingimage) then a 10 race in two weeks time. Need to try and keep mu milage up but tricky at the moment as require running partner to fend off dogs!

GOOD LUCK all those wonderful folks (esp Rosie and the lovely Oscarr!) and of course everyone else! Hope you have superb conditions! x

WW Ben is indeed amazing but quite frankly with a 75 min 10 miles so are you! My 10mile pb stands at 95 mins so hoping to beat that tomorrow!

  • Hi Emma, I think a bit of  pacing is still probably key here for the 10 mile race, a bit like the marathon. Start off steady then build on it. Not sure on the profile, if it is hilly? Hope it goes well for you, I'm sure you have still got some stamina & endurance to see you round - good luck!

  • TenjisoTenjiso ✭✭✭

Reikki - thank you for those kind words.  I'm glad I did it.  More than a quarter of those registered didn't even turn up!

Emma - good luck with the 10m race.

  • Morning all

Emma - good luck with your 10 mile raceimage Take it easy though!

I have only done two short runs since VLM, foot feel a bit better but not sur what will happen when i run! I have come down with a lurgy as well, so no running until that has gone! Feeling very fat and lazy!
