I'm training for my first olympic distance and don't know how to account for my daily cycle commute (only about 8 km each way) in my training programme. It doesn't involve enough work / effort to include it in place of some of the cycle sessions, but on the other hand I don't want to overtrain and end up injured. Any advice? Thanks!

i would just look at it as a bit of extra easy riding - you said yourself theres not enough effort involved so either make more effort and count it or keep cruising to work and use it as extras, just my thoughts.
if its no real effort then I would class it the same as walking the dogs.........not counted as run training and won't really affect your other training...........but good in its own right
You could always make the commute longer if you didn't want to go out again, so instead of cycling 8km home go a different way that would take you how ever far you need for your training.
Thanks all for the advice!
fyi - we're come into the office on the race bikes today and we'll ride home via a longer route and use it as a TT session - probably an hour ride at high intensity
You could use lamp posts or street lights for interval training. Work hard for three posts relax for one, repeat or something like that.
Id say turn it into extra training. Was speaking to a coach in Birmingham and he says he gets all his athletes to commute if possible. The extra time in the saddle will do you the world of good. If your in a rush to get there then just turn the journey home into a session. Or you can always run as soon as you get back and turn it into a brick session.
I might only be 8 k but you can make it a hard 8k of intervas sprinting off from every set of lights
hammer it when you feel good
goeasy when you dont
