Femur stress fracture

Fed up with medics maybe someone can help.

I am 45 and have stepped up training significantly of late

I have pain a few hours after each run which lasts for a few days around my hip and upper thigh. It feels deep sometimes and others not. It is incredibly painful getting going on a run but 3 miles in there is no issue and pain subsides.
Interestingly at the end of a long run I am pain free for a few hours and think its cured.

The leg hang test does not cause pain. Physio said ITB and I have been foaming this to death and continuing running. Doesn't work and the leg is getting worse between runs.

It doesn't feel muscular. It feels like my thigh bone. I know that may count for little. It is hard to make it painful by stretches and massage intact impossible. It's related to really pushing forward in my running action and if I force my leg down onto the ground with a straight leg then release it I can feel pain up my thigh. Hopping or one leg squat will hurt but not when squatting but when I relax.

Anyone relate to this and let me know what could be. I am inclined to assume stress fracture and rest 4 weeks rather than pay for inconclusive tests.

  • My totaly non medical inclination would be ITB as physio suggested or a tendonitis issue
I would think if you had a femur stress fracture that you would know all about it !
  • I have just been diagnosed with a SF of the upper femur, came on very suddenly and got pain every time foot hit the ground, initially when running and then when walking briskly, eventually even just with gentle walking. Pain was in the groin area. Needed MRI for daignosis.

Does  not sound like your symptoms but if you are concerned stop running until you have had some advice as continuing to run on a sf femur can be dangerous. Any pain on passive hip movement?

Now I'm just waiting to see an orthopod but anyone with any advice re rehab I would be interested!

  • No pain at all when trying to move my hip around Ie lying on back and moving leg in all directions. The only way i get pain is standing on one leg or forcing the leg forward and then the pain only comes when i take away the force.

Inflamed hip bursa. The clue is the pain when tensioned muscle is released. Also the pain is somewhat difficult to pin point. Had this 20 years ago and put up with the pain for weeks. Eventually I was prescribed some really powerful anti inflame drugs and two days later it was gone for good.

    🙂

  • Hmmm thats the sort of response that i was looking for. I thought the bursa pain would be more outside of hip though? Is there any risk to running through this sort of condition?
  • Inti infams work quick ie nurofen and so does standing up and down with locked knees on a brick i.e gettin the flexors moving
  • well 3 months on and I am booked in for a bilateral hip arthoscopy to repair damaged tissue, remove a cyst on femur and other impingment type stuff.

Nobody knows anything without a scan and even then its not 100% surety.

  • now 12 months after bi lateral hip arthroscopy.

How did you get diagnosed?  I have the same symptoms and so far have had three different diagnoses -lactic acid - muscle tear and tendon tear.  It has been 6 weeks and still cannot do anything but walk without pain.  Last Doctor denied there was such a thing as a stress fracture.

  • well stress fractures do exist but would have thought they were rare in upper femur. Your symptoms could be anything in the hip.

I could have sworn that my hip problems were a fracture of upper femur it just felt that way. Intense pain on pushing down on leg. It was in fact the labrum (fleshy socket) of the hip that has become detached. Go and see a hip specialist, you never know.

By the way, all of the hip tests done manually even by specialist showed no hip problem at all. Only MRI disclosed the issue.

If your GP isn't playing ball, tell him/her to refer you to a specialist at your local hospital. Don't ask, demand. It's your right.
