Sometime back I had one done by HumanLab at the Reebok Club in Canary Wharf but I don't think they are there any more which is a shame as the trainer really knew his stuff and I was thinking of getting another one done to see how I compare now.
I have checked the Reebok website and it seams as though another company has taken over the VO2 testing, cant recommend them though as I know nothing about them. DC
From what I can gather, the new company at the Reebok use a Medical Graphics system the parent company to New Leaf……. the one that HumanLab had so many problems with, so in my view although it may be a more expensive system it is still from the same manufacturer……I would not go near it with a barge pole!
Hi Speedy tortoise, I looked into this recently . I am in Bupa and they do a number of fitness tests, including VO2 testing. Not all sites have treadmills to test, some bikes but I'm sure London does. The nearest to me is Solihull. It was just over £200 for non members and £145 if you are. I wanted to get in before my marathon in June but they don't do weekends and the last appointments are 3pm which is impossible if you have kids and work, so I havent managed to book in. The website will explain the tests which seem thorough. Would be interested to see how you get on.
University of Essex at Colchester and UEA at Norwich both do them. This site http://www.runningforfitness.org/ gives you some methods of rough calculations using no more than your weight, age and race times
I would've thought that one of the benefits of getting a true, accurate assessment of your VO2 max, LT, etc is so that you can actually compare it against things like your racing times, which can then flag up any specific training requirements, e.g. if you have a particularly high VO2 max compared to your performances, this would suggest you need to concentrate on improving running economy, as opposed to trying to improve VO2 max itself. If you're simply estimating VO2 max from your performances, this kind of information will be impossible to get at.
I've often thought about having an assessment done but it does tend to be pricey. So kind of waiting for the right opportunity to be someone's guinea pig.
I theeenk i found it on the tinternet somewhere - not got round to doing it myself - but did the one at La Santa - that was fun. I'll see if i can find it over the weekend.
I've had the tests at BUPA in London and at UAE, a few years back admittedly but I would say the UAE one was much better value for money and done by someone who knew what he was talking about. I would check their latest prices and ask who is currently doing the UAE one and what his or her qualifications are. Good luck.
Drummond Clinic in Maidenhead does VO2 and LT test for run, row and bike. Not exactly London, 25 mins train from Paddington. Not experience of using them for these tests, but they have been great for gait, PT, massage etc.
