How often do you...

BookyBooky ✭✭✭

Clean your keyboard, mouse, phone, etc?

I've just seen someone sneeze into their hand then return to typing, and couldn't help but think it was a bit image

But then I realised I can't remember the last time I cleaned my keyboard or mouse...

How do you clean a keyboard?!

Quite often. and I clean the one at work all the time. image

    um, never, really........ image

  • Does spitting on your finger and rubbing the keyboard count? image

  • When the keys are stuck so tight!! No not really, but amazingly it is now cheaper to buy new keyboards and mouses for offices than it is to bring in a specialist cleaner to go round and do them all.

I tip it upside down sometimes and give it a shake ...

    Your phone?  Does that help?

My Mum used to think a spit wash was adequate, so yes image

I think I might bring in some antibacterial wipes tomorrow and hope I don't do too much damage.

I cleaned my phone last night image Because the screen was so smeared and fingerprint covered that I couldn't really see it image

Never, if I was sharing a keyboard, I would do it every time though.
  • Sharing a keyboard is one thing, sharing phone headsets is another, especially if the other person uses lots of gel or spray.  Fortunately most call centres now give a headset to each operator.

  • The keyboard from my home PC was getting pretty disgusting*, so I put it through the dishwasher. Put it through on it's own, no dishwasher tablets, left it to dry out in the airing cupboard for a couple of days. Still works fine.

  • I took my work keyboard apart to clean it last year. never quite worked the same again! My lap top keyboard has never been washed (18 months).

At work I used to clean mine about once a month.  At home I never think to do it.

  • Every 2-4 weeks. I've got one of those compressed air dusters at work, it's quite satisfying blasting the keyboard with it image Also got some of the Cyber Clean putty for phone, laptop etc at home.

If I've had a stinking cold, I'll disinfect my keyboard, phone, mouse with antibac wet wipes. Got into the habit when I was sharing a desk with someone who always had a cold.

Funny to read this, I was driving to work yesterday and sneezed several times (I couldn't get to a tissue so put my hand over my nose and mouth) and then carried on driving

*adds steering wheel to the list of things to clean*

  • SuperCazSuperCaz ✭✭✭

My steering wheel gets done fairly regularly as I often drive after putting moisturiser on and it tends to gum up the wheel after a while.

if you think that is bad you should see what gets onto my hand and keyboard after late night surfing sessions.

Now you mention it, with the amount of fruit snacking I do at my desk - and oranges are particularly messy - you could probably get your RDA of vitamin C by licking my keyboard.

...OK, I've actually just given it a shake.  I think that might have been couscous that came out.

  • Lol Skotty! I shake mine out a lot and sometimes go over it with a computer wipe thingy, but prob not as often as i should. Took my phone apart recently and cleaned it, it was manky, yuck

    Guilty of the above.

In my current office - because we all share the equipment I tend to use the antibacterial wipes to clean it before I use it (phones, mouse etc)

  • I sometimes give mine a shake when I'm hungry .... a nice haul of bits of crisps and sandwich crumbs can make a nice cheap snack image

Actually never.  I sometimes clean the mouse when it gets all gunged up and doesn't work properly.  Dont' think the phone has ever been cleaned.  But I have an office of my own and I don't do sharing.

  • Ooh when I was working in another office a few months ago, the hot desks were taken, so i used a desk of a woman who was on leave.  I have NEVER seen such a filthy keyboard, it actually made me gag imageimageimage  In fact even thinking about it makes me shiver.  I got out the computer wipes, used about 5 of them, turned it upside down and shook out a whole heap of shit, and it was STILL utterly disgusting. I refused to use it and had to find somewhere else to sit.  Ewwwwwwwww

  • I have only cleaned my laptop key board once that I can remember, maybe twice. At work I think I have cleaned 3 keyboards in 5+ years. If I do clean electrical or electronic equipment its because dust and dirt can cause them to malfunction.

I have never been one for regular cleaning of anything except my body and clothes. Dirty things do get cleaned but for practical reasons never for appearance sake alone.

I'm with Quintin Crisp on the issue of dusting " "After four years," he quipped, "you don't notice the dust." Is that the first time the "stately Homo of England" has been quoted on RW?

I have noticed that people who are constantly cleaning, disinfecting and sanitising are often the most sickly. I dont know if thats the cause of their sickliness or an attempt to combat it, either way except for a once or twice yearly cold I dont as much as get a headache if I eat, drink, sleep and excersise right.

  • We used to have compressed air dusters in an office I used to worked in.  We never used them for cleaning keyboards image

When a colleague retired the new member of staff needed to give the desk a good clear before she could use it.  The previous occupant had allowed paperwork to accumulate to the extent that there wasn't an inch of the desk that wasn't under at least a foot, and in some cases 3 foot of paperwork.

Underneath the desk was so filthy that some of the paperwork had stuck to it and was impossible to get off even by scraping with a razor blade.  In the end she asked for a new desk.

As for the computer, the manager took one look at it and declared that we needed to buy a new one.

  • Ewww SC

My secretary cleans mine (that sounds bad even to me image)

  • The cleaning staff give everyone's desk a wipe over in the evening, so keyboards and phones are wiped on a regular basis.
I probably wipe down my keyboard, screen and phone with a sanitised wipe every couple of months. Don't think anyone has wiped the keyboards and mice that we all use on a regular basis. Hmm, going to take some wipes with me next time and give keyboards and mice a swift wipe over now.
