Ya MM, fully insured through disability company thing?  Its just going to make life very hard for BF transporting his son. Hes 19 and quadraplegic, with an active social life as well as lots of other appointments for his health. My car doesnt even transport his folding wheelchair. image

  • Options

That's a real bummer Kaz, but at least he is OK. And thank-fully he wasn't on a motor bike.

My sea swim has been postponed due to lack of sea. Got my tides wrong. But I have a date with 'high tide' on Thursday evening.

Just watch out for the turtles. Frightened or otherwise. image

  • Options

Yip Simon it could of been a lot worse indeed. Thankfully its only a car, if somewhat inconvenient in the circumstances!

  • Options

    MM - I'll be wearing anti-turtle cream.

Kaz - Damn!!  good to hear everyone is okay.  How long will it take to get fixed?

  • Options

Itll be an insurance job, involving the mobility lot so who knows??  I expect a while. The work itself will take a while but the paperwork before will probably take longer!image

Kaz - good luck!!  Will the  insurance pay for a rental vehicle in the meantime?  I think it should, especially if it's a mobility special one.

  • Options

They should, I think, can't really do without one.

    Kaz, bummer about the car..

Star Trek was excellent.  And the storyline is open for more films to follow...

  • Options

DV - of course it is! Looking forward to seeing it.

Kaz - hope you and BF get that sorted quickly.

    A good Monday to all.

Kaz - Sorry to hear about the accident, but it's good that nobody was hurt. The car being out of action is a pain, but cars can always be fixed.

DV - I need to get down to see the new Trek film. I sense another cheap cinema night in my future. I loved the reboot film.

Well done to all those running at the weekend.

ATM - Are you doing the Dunlop 10km this weekend?

Kaz - sorry to hear. He feeling okay this morning? No stiffness or soreness anywhere?

Amazing timing for this photo - just at the moment the foam-backed leatherette covered, wooden seat platform gave way...as gravity introduced The Jimbob to the hard cold steel of the drumming stool  upright support.

Reckon that would have needed stitches fella' image  Ouchie!

That's a bummer, kaz.* Don't give up on the weather. Between 5 and 7 am, today, I watched as it went through the entire repertoire from driving rain to brilliant sunshine. We just have to accept that' summer' will be in 10-minute chunks...*

Yes, to Dunlop, Eggy. The 10k is hilly but more interesting than the 5k out-and-back route. And the cakes at the Finish are fantastic. This is the race with the world's best homebaking. You'll love it.

    Happy Monday everyone.

Kaz - hope the car gets sorted soon, glad no one was hurt.

Killerton half was a tough one. Beautiful trail run but the hills didn't seem to end. Finished in bout 1:50 but waiting for the results to come out. Was happy with the time as although I've kept running since Paris I've not done any speed work.

Advice please - I have a real habit of trying to run up hills too fast and this was almost the end of me yesterday,  having to walk way more than I wanted. I also find running slowly up hill possibly worse, is this all in my head or is there a good techneque to running hills?

TD - excellent.  You appear to have a bigger....medal....though

I'm astonished at how motivated by cake this entire thread is.  Even Stool Cake.

Honestly? walk them! Learn to speed walk up hills. There's a few youtube clips of how Killian Jornet (a super duper ultra athlete) recommends to go up hills. You will expend more energy running up a hill than a fast walk.

I've found I can walk a hill faster than people can run it!

I agree Emmy, my friend was walking up a killer hill last week and I was 'running' at about the same pace, and was considerably more tired! When I switched to walking though, I couldn't keep up.

Trev, living in Norfolk I dislike the few hills we have, but I've found that running slightly slower, taking shorter steps and looking to where you're going, not where you are, helps me to keep going. I always feel loads better if I can run up a hill and then keep going as well. As if the flat bits are easier as you've just done the incline up!

Weedy, ha, a smoking jacket... That's a good idea.

Yum, cake... It's a close run thing for me between cheese and cake as to which I'd run further for. Now, cheesecake...

    Good morning all.

Kaz - sorry about the car, and I know it's a huge hassle, but it is just a car.  The people are all ok so all is good.

For me, I have to speed up hills. Its in my head I think. I find that if I attack the hill I feel better, and everything after the hill feels so much easier.  If I just survive the hill by plodding up it, I seem to feel more tired.  We have lots of hills around here, so I can't really avoid them - although I have plotted out one very convoluted route over 8 miles that avoids almost all of them image

    Catching up....

ATM - read your comment about the blades, wasn't expecting that.  I couldn't stop laughing, I was in tears.  Finally when I explained to Mrs P what was so funny, she just looked at me as if I needed psychatric help.image

Simon - my advice for swimming in cold water.  Dont !

RR - 8th !  Fantastic. Cant wait to hear about it.

Weedy - It's when I haven't got time, it's the hardest.  All I have to say to you is, George Ballas.  Cheers for the list, cant back out now.

Trev - i'm no expert on hills or running techniques but what i do is I increase my speed approaching them / accelerating into them so that i have extra momentum to take me up - if its a long hill i'm still gasping like the rest, plus it helps to know when the hills are coming - another reason to check your race route/elavation chart so you know when to wind it up a little.

the other things that help running up hills - 1) lean into the hill a little, 2) move your arms more to help drive you up.
