I have it on very good authority that the ITLR team safely reached Brussels, with a police escort.

I have goosebumps, I am so proud to know those people!

we live free , we can choose how we live our lives , they can't

so proud to know the team and what they've achieved

Hi, I am thinking of doing my 1st marathon in Paris 2014 and need some advice if you have taken part in this event previously.  I have an email from Sports Tours International who will arrange the Paris hotel and the Race entry fee.  I have checked up on the suggested hotels and they are cheaper to book direct.  However I understand that I need to take a signed Medical Certificate to the Expo in order to collect my Race Entry Number.  Is it easy to get to or am I better going with Sports Tours as this is my first marathon I dont want the stress of any problems before the race.

Has anyone got any tips or advice for me?

    Thanks in advance

    Lesley

Liversedge Lesley - There's no need to do this with a tour. The entry is first come, first served. It's easy to get into. The entries open in September, enter the day they open and you'll get in no problem at all. You do need the medical certificate. A link of the official website to print of a form and take to your GP for signing. There's no need to go through a tour group for Paris.

It's a great event and well worth being anyones first. There are many on here that have ran it for several years. Next year will be three in a row in Paris for me.

Don't worry about getting stressed, just dump your worries on us. You'll not find a friendlier, more helpful bunch of runners than in this very thread.

    Hiya Lesley

Lots of us here did Paris as our first marathon and we just keep on going back because we love it.  Stick around - we're a friendly bunch and there's not much that somebody can't answer about the race.

It's simple enough to organise your medical certificate yourself - so long as you make sure you download the official template from the Paris Marathon website you can't go wrong - and there will be plenty of OCD chat about it on here later on in the year.  If that's your main worry then I would say go for the cheaper option and organise it all yourself.

Tell us a bit about yourself image

Wohlf: Was there a bike purchase?

There wasn't then, but the posted bike will be ordered tomorrow.  Considered going through the Cycle to Work scheme, but I don't have the patience to jump through hoops - I want it now!

    Wohlf, fancy Millport in September?

I've done a bit of digging and this sounds like a great idea!  I suffer from an inability to drive, but if there's a way of getting there I'll sign myself up image

Welcome to the thread, Lesley. You won't have to worry about a thing....image

Wohlf, it's a Sunday afternoon so public transport's possible. There is someone else coming through, though, so maybe sharing's possible, too. You'd make about 10 of us.The Caledonian Massive is pretty massive. We'll probably get to chose the Paris pub for ever and ever...unless anyone wants to wrestle us for it...

LA, I've been riding the pb escalator on shorter races for the last year. The times started coming down when I lost a lot of weight. Then i adapted a marathon training plan I got from someone on here. That plan helped me do very well in Paris this year and all that structured training helped the times come down even more. at some point soon I expect the escalator to stop. We're all capable of going quite a bit quicker but the training is tough and the mileage is high, I'm not sure if I can commit to heavy mileage, already getting niggling injuries. If you follow good plans and are lucky to get through a good training campaign you will do well, but there are so many factors and things that can catch you out. That's why we all go a bit loony loon when we are tapering, cause we are well para that we might blow 4 or 5 months of training. I lost the plot big time!

Welcome Leslye - what the others said.

Well done ITLR folks - absolutely brilliant effort for a good cause.  Hope lots of money was raised.

I think Jimbob has hot ona very important point - weight.  Although I hesitate to suggest it, being somewhat underweight seeds you up a lot.

Message thing now activated - hadn't even noticed that before.  The public transport links are better than I expected, but I'll give Audrey a shout, thanks for that.  As long as initiation into the 'Massive only involves turning up, I'm confident of success!

And hello Lesley!  I've only been posting here for a couple of months, and I'm happy to say you've found yourself in the right place.  Promise. (Paris 2014 will be my first Paris marathon too.)

Thanks Scott (et al) - brilliant words.

We have been through heaven and hell this week but remembering the plight of trafficked people and seeing the people and kids at the squat yesterday was a brilliant way to end ITLR.

All of your support has been invaluable.

As per Weedy, our thoughts the last 2 days - since we heard - have been with James and his family.

Hi Lesley, Welcome to our tour group, it's free !  You live near Leeds ...  Do you know Rob ?  Don't worry you'll have time to meet him.  Paris 2013 was my first marathon and I got loads of good advice.  I don't know if you have been lurking but the thread does jump around but I LOVE IT, when the others are on form I'm in tears of laughter.  We are a mixed bunch, there are first timers, old timers, youngsters, ultras, hares and the odd tortoise. This year we were 70 runners, I met a few the night before and only one during the race however I felt part of a team instead lost amongst 50000 people.

One of the member is involved with a charity, he organised "In The Long Run" from Bratislava to Brussels to raise awareness about human trafficking. Others from the thread participated in the 1250km, over 8 days and temperatures reaching 40°C.  Amazing achievement, amazing people.  It's an honour to rub shoulders with them.

kaz, it's such a shame that flights off Orkney are so expensive image * I can see the Loch Lomond 2014 Tri in my crystal ball, for you, though...image Simon could train us. Eh, Scvoot, Eggy etc?*

Meantime, my forum Bookmarks are all gone..I have to find the thread everytime I log in.Or is it just me? Wohlf, LL and LawyerA, I've tried to message you through the forum but I don't know if that works or not.

    I think I'll self-refer to PC91's ' odd tortoise' list...

My bookmarks are gone too - a  real pain!

Yes ATM - I think there is something new on the horizon for meimage Then again who would I be without a new challenge or two per year!! image And yes I think I may be doing my training swimming the Pentland Firth - Bloody flights are expensive but the boat prices have also increased astronomically. For me and the girls on the ferry to Aberdeen with a cabin in one direction.....a kick in the arse of £200!image

Anyway I was made to rest my back this morning......but I may cycle later to reduce impact on said back! BF is of to his homeland tomorrow - Comrie, so I am on my own with no-one to make me behave!!! image

I wish all  ITLR's a safe journey home. And hopefully you will all get a few days rest before normal life resumes.

Morning all. What the others said - your support has been absolutely invaluable over the last 8 days. It was a weird kind of camping experience - although we we roughing it it tents (and it was pretty rough at times) we always had our 'media hub' (Weedy's laptop) and our phones so we were able to keep in touch and it very much felt like you were all with us. In fact, there were times where you guys were better informed than us about what was going on!

Back on the train for me, but the others are currently planning a commando raid on the chocolate  shop at the airport.

Morning, not heard from JB73's other half, but hopefully we'll hear later on.

Just trotted in, humid run, did about a mile warmup/recovery from Sunday and then the rest of the session was a decent pace tempo run. 10 miles in all. So damp and humid out there .....
