SS yep normal average pace is 12.5 mph and my average for the whole 18 miles yesterday was 16.8 so very happy.
Difference is thought that at 12.5mph I in Z2 and yesterday I spend the entire time in Z5 so not sustainable for IM distance. Still a very much work in progress but it was nice to see that I was not the slowest at the bike bit. The run bit however I am still firmly last at!
K9 half the skill in this malarky is getting to the start line in one piece if running is the major cause of your injuries i would limit long runs to 2 hours max and bin any speedwork by all means run faster every now and then but no sprints fartleks etc
Make up for the decrease in run training by ramping up the bike i did. This at the first Outlaw a couple of years ago as i was nursing injuries and had a blinder with a massive PB it is really all about being superstrong on the bike so you are not totally creamed for the run
Ok, question... How do you set bike race pace for a 1st IM? Bearing in mind I haven't done a half...
Is HR a good measure? Most of my rides are done at a decent clip but HR barely gets into Z2 (134-148) if at all. Mostly bobbles around 125 so I wonder if this is a good indicator for me to gauge effort by.
SJ i never use a HR monitor when racing but go on perceived effort first 30 miles i take it real steady 4 to 5 out of 10 effort then move up to around 7 i just make sure i stay aerobic at all times this has left me fresh enough to actually run all the marafun 6 out of 7 times, the time lost taking it easier on the bike more than makes up for the time lost walking most of the mara
I go on perceived rate too, with the longer rides, you will feel what pace feels right for you. Going out and putting a killer ride in, is probably not the best idea. Losing a few minutes on the bike, Is better that losing an hour on the run because you pushed it too hard.
not sure what zone i was thinking about on my long bike on saturday as I was riding with 2 others so doing their pace..........but the one nasty nasty hill had my heart rate over 185 which is a tad high for the bike
Thought i would try my first quick run since my op, strapped my arm up to stop my shoulder moving and went for a 30 mins jog...... 2 hours later quite a nice one atmed run, gonna try the turbo tomorrow i think its gonna be a while till road riding or swimming happens though
SS should have killed 2 birds with 1 stone and took the dog on the 6 miler
My mutt Wilson the Mighty Iron Dog is currently Ultra training with me i am creamed after A 3 hour run over the moors and he just looks at me " is that all you got?"

Hello SA!
I have an entry....but still have several weeks more in which to injure myself.
I am still not sure if I'll be there - but will see how far I can get towards it and see...
I also had an entry last year but got hamstring tendonitis!!
I had an entry for IM Frankfurt a few years ago too but got knee trouble I think that time. Hopeless.
I have good endurance but no speed at all on the bike. I am your opposite.
EP - alarm at 4:30?
Ouch

Any tips on how to settle on race pace/effort?
