I've been a runner for many years now and have completed the London Marathon a few times. I've just joined a running club (Barking Road Runners) and for the first time I've helped out on a water station (mile 14) at this event. I found it a great joy to see what happens on the other side and what goes on in the support of those running on the day. What surprised me most is just how much runners do need a drink and the many thank you's that some will get to you for just passing them a bottle of water. It's made me realize just how much volunteers are needed at any event and without them they may not exist (eg Park Run's for example). Lets all try and find time to give back to a sport that we all enjoy.
