Hello everyone,
So after 14 years in track, 13 of which I have been hurdling I am considering a switch from sprint hurdling to 800m. Mainly due to a series of injuries and stagnating in the middle of nowhere performance-wise I think I’d like a challenge/change. I am 24 years old and at a point where I either go all in with 110mH or try something new.
I am an average hurdler (110mH pr : 14.3, 100m: 10.9). I have also run the occasional 400m (sub 50 a few times) 400mH (sub- 54 with 13 strides to for 6 hurdles) when asked to sub in for club and college meets. However despite sprinting for most of my life, I am not a natural sprinter, I’ve been avoiding that fact. I am a 6ft, lean 143 lb (65 kg) Kenyan with an abnormally long stride.
Based on the information here do you believe I have the potential to be a good middle distance runner, particularly in the 800m? I love the idea of aiming towards a sub 1:55 800m (or are least a better middle distancer than a hurdler), but I can’t tell if I’m being too optimistic. If yes, what kind of training should I be doing to make the transition as efficiently and effectively as possible? Just for context I am at grad school in Canada so will have access to a gym and track when that time comes.
Thanks.
