It's probably about this point in the thread that someone posts the following, so I will, if I may image

    IM virgins checklist image

Anyone can do an Ironman if they train.
If you don't train, you will fail.
If you do train, you may still fail; there are no guarantees.
Becoming an Ironman is a top 3 life experience.

There's a huge wealth of experience of training for an Ironman on this forum; seek opinions, ask advice, then do what works for you.

If your swimming is rubbish, get some 1-2-1 lessons now...yes, now.

Some ways to spread the financial load...

    It is all about pacing....

First thing to do is enter... July - perhaps add the little extra for the cancellation insurance... (bit of wimp clause to me..)

Then get swimming lessons.... August/September (It only took 5 to get me going... the thought of the money you have paid to enter is a good incentive to get the most out of your lessons and put the time in between each lesson) No need to worry about running yet because if you cant get out the swim you will not be running.

Perhaps a year's pass to your local pools too - not normally expensive....

Then get family sorted out for christmas, your bike, of funds towards your bike... Does your office do a bike to work scheme? - Tax breaks on a new bike.... They buy if for you on and intrest free loan etc.

Then for a birthday present your pirate kit, buy the minimum.

I think I will seriously have to talk nicely to OH into letting me buy yet another bike (maybe it can be my Christmas and Birthday pressies for the next two years image)

I'd recommend investing in some good quality high factor sun cream image
  • Options

    right

    Already have pirate kit

Can do entry fee in 2 months

Only have MTB, replace that in 3-4 months, can do 50+ miles at moment on MTB

Swimming going along, can swim 1 mile

    finished half mara on Sunday

NEED Wetsuit, New Bike, OW practice, lots more training

    You'll be signing up then......

And I'd recommend putting it on very thoroughly first thing in the morning and really taking the time to get to those hard to reach spots - then top it up properly after the swim. Obviously* the wetsuit rubs the sunscreen off your shoulders completely..................

    .

    .

    .

    *It's obvious now..............

    Oh poor you Gyraffe!!

Come on SA, once you have the Pirate Kit the rest is a foregone conclusion really....see you there!

Suppose you could sell them...  the process interferes with training though... image

    I have / can do:

    • pirate kit (most importantly)
    • pay for IM over 2 months
    • a wetsuit
    • a training bike (can't do IM on it but it'll do for now)
    • can swim 3k now but only in the pool
    • can ride 40 miles now or so
    • have run a half mara (once)

    Must have / do:

    • Get an idea about bike maintenance
    • Get to grips with proper fuelling / nutrition
    • get my running back in order big time
    • get a better bike whenever affordable
    • get to grips with open water
    • make a plan...
