  • Cadence: the number of revolutions per minute that the pedals/cranks/chainrings make. Apparently somewhere between 80 and 100 revs a minute is about right. Everyone has a 'natural' cadence, though this can be improved (generally increased) with training. It's all about efficiency. Ripping your guts out grinding hard at a cadence of 50, or twiddling merrily at a cadence of 120, wastes energy that could be giving you more forward momentum if you were pedalling at a cadence of 90.

If your cadence drops eg going up a hill, change to an easier gear (larger back or smaller front ring) to boost your revs a minute (and conserve valuable energy!)

If your cadence rises, eg going downhill, change to a harder gear (smaller back or larger front ring) to reduce your revs a minute (and go faster!)

Some bike computers have an extra sensor that measures your cadence; you can count the number of times each minute that one of your feet reaches the 12 o'clock position (or every 15 seconds then multiply the answer by 4) but it becomes a fairly complex task if you're having to concentrate on the road at the same time.

  • Imeccentric says "Sprints at pools are typically 400m but 750 for OW's".

While Super Sprints are meant to be 400m and Sprints 750m, most pools are too small to have enough lanes for people to be doing 750m, so 400m is pretty much standard, some may stick a bit on the cycle or run to try and make up for it a bit.

So whats the true defination for a pirate?  "Someone with nothing better to do that take the pi**, sorry micky, out of other members"  Buggers are always on here.....

  • and welcome to you too.
  • Who needs mates when you have forums like this!!!

Lots of discussions about 4th stage, isn't it about getting to registration, on time, awake and not knackered before you start?

  • "Who needs mates when you have forums like this!!!"

That's lucky as you attitude isnt likely to attract any in a hurry.

Yes we're all a bunch of piss artists anyway, im sure you wouldnt fit in.

  • I take it I actually need to finish an event before I can qualify?

This time of the year I do take the drinking bit seriously!

  • No you dont have to finish an Event, Plum got in image
  • Who the feck are you anyway?
  • I'm the quiet one who has been plodding along at the back of some sprints this summer.  Might have seen me comming in as you finished loading your car up.

Missed Kona this year so it will have to wait...

  • Is plum doing a race next yet?
  • smiley - the correct question is

"is Plum going to turn up AND finish the swim...."
  • I always shy away from teasing Plum about his swimming. I did draft the Fist lap of IMDE off him in 2006 before realising I wouldn't make the cutoff if I continued onto lap 2. I'm still a carp swimmer now, but better than Plum image
  • what the hell started that?  I'm curious.  How can you start 50 threads yet only have 154 posts to your credit.  Sounds like a perfect candidate for supersprints.  And, I think you will find that the Pirates are one of the most supportive groups in triathlon, not just on here but on any of the tri forum communities.  GO PIRATES!

I thought Plum was God-like in the water!  Or is that Barlos?

  • 50 Threads!!!!  I didn't know I could write that much (or be that lost!).  As a newbie I have found this as the perfect site for asking the most basic of questions.  Usually I just get pointed to previous posts that I can't find for looking.

I'm sure the Pirates are one of the most supportive groups.  My initial question (and I didn't mean it as a dig), is all I ever see pirates do is take the micky out of each other, but I believe that can only be done when you respect each other and their efforts, and are willing to take as good as you get.  If anyones read into otherwise my appologies  (can I have a T Shirt then?).

Supersprints and sprints sounds the answer for probably another year.  Been a cr*p runner all my life, found this swimming and cycling bit as quite a good alternative.  Pools all this year, so wetsuit and OW plans for next.  Would Plum mind if I followed him for the first 400m before giving up?

  • Neil, you can do whatever you can imagine, whether that be supersprints, Ironman races, whatever you can set your mind to you can accomplish, anyone can.

Maybe I didnt see the irony or interpred your first question as a dig?

Ask away, as always we'll always try and answer any questions.

"Is it a club? No, but it is a group of loyal and like-minded people. Is it a joke? No, but it is a laugh. Is it an attitude? Yes. And that attitude echoes the Ironman brand - Anything is Possible - then adds its own rider, 'if you believe in yourself'. But what sets the Pirates apart is their sense of fun. They have turned into a huge presence within the world of triathlon, a world that can sometimes appear to the newcomer to be a little po-faced. Commentators, organisers and crowds at Ironman events around the world acknowledge the yellow and black kit both on and off the course - the supporters' wear their own pirate gear with pride and a great deal of noise."

""Occasionally there have been accusations of the group being cliquey because we know each other and have in-jokes and shared history. But that really is unfounded, because each year we not only welcome new members, but we actually seek them out and encourage them to join in - so they can become part of next year's shared history."
  • I agree with your statement of you can do what you want.  Just my current level of training means not quite ready for Blenheim let alone Hawaii, "missus would you mind stop laughing, youl'd like to lie on the beach!"  kids want the chauffer and work expects some work done occasionally.  And the bank manager definately won't give me any more money for some of the better spec gear out there.

I recognise the itallics, had a read of your website this afternoon (it was either that or working), very good it is.  And the type of goods in your shop I think probably sums up Pirates excellently.  Couldn't decide if I prefered the swim, bike, heli, or bed, food, drink tri more.

Looking at the Eton sprints and maybe Windsor next year  (or maybe London, if it has the same atmosphere as the marathon which carries your round).  So might be a few years before I'm overtaking you yet.....

  • The only Trilathon that has a a 'London Marathon' atmsphere is Ironman, you wont find 10's of thousands coming out to support any races.

Ive done London & Windsor, plus spectated at Blenheim, for atmosphere Windsor & London are pretty much on a par and better than Blenhiem.

  • Back to the glossary - err.... don't want to appear to take it too seriously but there's a few on there that could do with changing....

Crit - better to say bunch than pack - a group of cyclists in a race is a bunch not a pack - they'll be talking about a ***ing pace line next.

Derailleur - it's a mechanism that moves the chain between the rear sprockets of the cassette (rear derailleur or rear mech) or front chain rings (front derailleur or front mech) in order to change gear not a system of variable ratio gears that's a description of the mechs, shifters, cassettes etc in total.

Hybrid - it's crap off road and crap as a race bike so saying it's a good all rounder is a bit misleading.

Slick Tyres - a tyre without tread - you get fat road slicks and narrow racing tyres with tread so the definition given isn't really right.

Clip In Pedals - more correctly called Clipless Pedals

Cassette- something like.....collective term for the sprockets on the rear hub which provide a selection of different gear ratios.  The more teeth on a sprocket the smaller (easier) the gear.

Toe Clips - not sure they've got this one right - a toe clip is the old fashioned system used in conjunction with toe straps - so yes it is clip on a bike pedal stopping the foot being too far forward but saying see also Clip In Pedals makes it sound like it's the same thing when it's not.   Better to say  something like Toe Clips - the traditional system used in conjunction with leather or nylon straps to hold the foot on the pedal - largely superceded by modern systems where the shoe attaches directly to the pedal by means of a cleat (see Clipless Pedals).

Wrench - bike mechanic ?? In America maybe - never heard that expression over here.

Tri Bike - A time trial bike that may not conform to UCI regulations.

Time Trial Bike - A bike designed to put the rider in an aerodynamic position - usually with the bars in a low position relative to the saddle (better than saying a high saddle and low bars - the saddle is no higher than any other bike)

  • Yeah but then someone got funny about the difference between a sprint and a supersprint.

And the fact that apparently we are rude to each other......only when I get the chanceimage

  • Any Plum is upset about all you bastards taking the piss out of his drowning.

It is the season of peace on earth and goodwill to all men so take your foot of his neck

And no he is not doing a long course next year unless his wife leaves him enough money after the divorce to buy a new swimming costume in which case he will go and do Almere all on his miserable own

    Bah Hum bloody bug
