Song To The Siren by This Mortal Coil. The greatest recording ever made bar none, fires so many emotions and still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up all these years later. And it's almost unknown.
It is simply superb, but anything that Liz Frazer sang was truely haunting, be it as 'This Mortal Coil', or 'The Cocteau Twins'
How about 'My Sister' byTindersticks, blind, wheelchair bound, beaten by lover, died............
'Our Town' iris Dement (sadly the official video is not on YouTube, well it is, but not with the song - but a classical piece - if yo ucould synch the 2, you'd watch it in silence........)
My oh my, time sure flies I like what you've done to your hair I've been fine, yeah these boys are mine That must be your little girl there
Some friendships grow distant with time And it's no wonder Emily, so much can change We're too far to visit, too busy to write But a closeness between us remains
Best friends are made through smiles and tears And sometimes that fades over miles and years But I knew right away when I saw you again Emily, we'll always be friends
I still sing now and then Mostly at weddings for friends And I just bet you still get A yearning to paint now and then
They tore down our whole street Now there's a bank where the house was we shared back in school Remember we both have each other to thank For all the boyfriends we're not married to
Stay as you are and you'll go far You signed my yearbook Don't forget me when you're a big star
We can't stay it's getting late And they said not to let you get tired We'll just be up the street The number's right here by your side
Oh no it's no trouble I don't want to hear about how all this changes my plans I'll see you tomorrow Call me tonight Emmy, please let me do what I can
Halleleujah (by almost anyone except that X factor wotsit's murdering of it) gets to me, but that's partly the association with a particular moment in time, rather than the song itself being sad.
Don't ask me why, but Rod Stewart's version of Sailing has me in tears every time I hear it.
Don't wanna miss a thing by Aerosmith from the movie "Armageddon". This gets me going every time, it was the first song played on the car radio on the way back from my Dad's funeral

Or, these wonderfully poignant songs??
'Tiny Tears' Tindersticks (liked them since I first heard them on Mark Radcliffes late night show)
'Green Fields Of France' The Men They Couldn't Hang (the most raw, & angry!, version)
'Bombers Moon' Mike Harding (his father never returned from a mission, it still puts a shiver down my spine)
'Christmas 1914' Mike Harding (Lions led by Donkeys - another 'tear in the eye song')
'Our Town' iris Dement (sadly the official video is not on YouTube, well it is, but not with the song - but a classical piece - if yo ucould synch the 2, you'd watch it in silence........)
I agree with the poster above about the kate Bush song, reaching out (from the same album) is also very emotive song.
Almost evenrything by a band called the red House Painters.
Joy Division - Atmosphere
Johnny Cash - hurt
Can't remember the songs by 2 or 3 by the Editors of their first two albums
No regrets - Walker Brothers
Never Never - The Assembly (brings back bad memories!)
...........and loads more
How about Camera Obscuras version of (Jim Reeves) 'The Blizzard'

Before moving onto Shimmy's happy songs here are a couple more sad ones
Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys
Billy Bragg - The Saturday Boy
As for happy songs:
The Cure - Friday (I'm in love), although only works well if listened to on the day before Saturday
Billy Bragg - Waiting for the great leap forward
Any Girls Aloud (please keep that guilty secret quiet - ta)
*snirk* Girls Aloud???
I am so not going to be able to look at you without bursting into fits of laughter now.
Wait til I tell Mr Shimms
Girls aloud!!! Oh my days!!!
Stevie Wonder - Sir Duke never fails to raise a smile!!
Nothing like "Something Kinda Ooh" playing on the ipod on the last mile of a LSR to get the legs moving
Shimmy - I will have to tell you and Mr Shimms my Girls Aloud Dream, it's clean and nearly as long as The Purple Joke
Not today I'm not....
I sound like a 40 a day hacker....
depends if you mean the words or the association.

Chest infection Shims.... Curse of the asthmatic
We're not allowed colds - I think its the law that they wind up on your chest!
oh poor you, hope it clears up soon
*tucks LB in nice and warm*
Fank yew!
not a "song" but
"the last post"
for those who do the sodbury slog every year it is difficult not to cry when they play that
Oops,
I meant, 'get all teary'
Gawd, is your mind always in the gutter Minky?
Pretty much, yeah.

The Verve - The Drugs Don't Work. Came out at the time my Mum was going through chemo etc.
Brainbug - Nightmare. Bought it on the day my Dad and I had to tell her it was terminal and she was coming home to die
Ok, so the last one is not a 'sad' song but evokes 'sad' memories
