I'm happy to mentor.  I learned a lot training for Roth this year, much of it from various threads on here, which I'm more than happy to pass on.   I'm not great at heavily stuctured plans, but I know what works  in general terms, at least for me, anyway image

Roth was just over 10, so the next IM (whenever that may be) will be a sub-10 attempt.  Anyone interested in receiving/giving tips, or just generally chewing the fat, is welcome to PM me.

I'm already mentoring one for next year - happy to take another. like CD I'm not great on structured plans but am happy to offer what advice I do have - after 4 IM and countless other tris, I have been around a bit so to speak!

I'm already sorted for next year but it was nice to have a few offers from folk image

Looks like this thread is a great way of hooking up, I will point people in the right direction if they haven't seen it already

I'm not terribly sure how much completing one IM having overtrained, bawled and wailed my way through 30 weeks of training (while consistently ignoring my heart rate) qualifies me to mentor some other poor sucker but if anyone wants an overemotional woman as a mentor, they know where I am.

I would love some help image I'm first timer who is going to do The Outlaw 2011.  Have drawn up my training plan but might need some help downs the months if I get stuck in a rut.  But would mostly need help for tips on nutrition, race day, gear etc etc.

I live in East Sussex so if anyone is close would be great to meet up once in a while for ride and to pick your brains image

Quite common for some of us to ride around Surrey area, Cranleigh area, keep an eye out as there are normally threads for group rides.  Normally gets going Feb/March but there maybe some rides in the Autumn.

There are a few people down your way.

INFRS as my "mentor" says.... regularly!

And I am inclined to agree with him. Call a spade a spade is my motto.

I'm a newbie and could do with some support. Email chat/support would be fine. How do I proceed with this please?
    Thanks.

Joolze - look through this thread, pick someone you like the sound of, send them a message through RW initially, take it from there.

I think I'd really benefit from a mentor.  I'm a numpty newbie who's just about to buy her first road bike and has competed in one sprint tri.

Outlaw sounds like a good target for 2011 (gulp) but I have hardly any swim endurance and the furthest I've run is 20 miles (The Grizzly), although I am doing Beachy Head marathon in October.

I'd have lots of questions about the most ridicuously simple things particularly anything of a technical nature.  I can imagine that might get annoying ... image

I imagine they're all questions we've all asked at one time or another.  Whether that makes us qualified to answer is another matter!  image

Happy to offer myself as a mentor - only been doing tris a couple of years,  but completed IMNZ this year so I can definitely advise on newbie mistakes and faux pas image as I've probably made them all in the very recent past. I'm sailing with the pirate ship to Regensberg, based in Edinburgh, but spend quite a bit of time in Birmingham.

Coaching wise, I have an actual coach of my own (I know, get me!) so probably can comment a bit on training plans as I follow a very structured plan, so should theoretically know what a good one looks like.

I'm female, mid thirties, believe that any ride over 2.5 hours should have a mandatory cake stop, and that a tri is a good warm up for some full-on pub action. I can't advise on serious bike porn or help anyone crack 10 hours, but I might be able to help someone splash, wobble and plod through their first IM. Here ends the party political broadcast image

PUP, i'm in Edinburgh as well, and I also believe rides over 2.5hrs need a mandatory cake stop image  In fact we fitted in 2 tea stops in a recent 55 mile ride image  I'll PM you later, as it might be nice to meet up some time for a ride or what not?  (i'm a mid-thirties girlie too image)

I have heard he has a thing for rings!!

I wouldn't recommend doing cake stops on rides. For long rides on hot days I would stop once for the absolute minimum time to buy more water. If you can't ride over 2.5hours without stopping, then build up until you can. Most of us don't have huge amounts of training time and you need to make those long rides count.

Cake rides are good for fun but if you need to significantly improve your cycling to make the cut off then I don't think it's the best way to go about it.

  • Options
having said that, if you think you're well able to make the cut-offs and cake-stop social rides make training more fun then go ahead.

    See, the mentoring has started.

I would listen to this poster.

And in the interests of fairness, Smithy says something worth listening to once in a while.

I struggle to train well for Ironman in group ride situations as I tend to sit in and get towed. So unless your group make/embarass you into taking your fair share of pulling then you would be better off training solo to get used to having to do all the work yourself.

Its too easy to get towed round then claim a fab ride. Training on your own theres only you to do the work. Why not save the group/cake stop ride for your "easy" week and go solo in your hard weeks. Like Melli said, theres only so much time most people can sneak in for long stuff, and most people cant afford to "waste" those days
