I was wondering the same. I don't usually advocate single sex clubs, but it does seem as though some women (quite probably a generalisation...) feel intimated (another guess) by predominantly male clubs.

Another example - I've often observed the free-weights area in gyms. It's rare to see a woman in amongst the guys lifting weights. Maybe single-sex is sometimes necessary to overcome issues around engagement?

there are many women only clothes shops that cater now just for us ladies and they do cycling clothing not just in pink and black. sewaty betty is another, although some prices are a little high!

Happychap, there would be no point in me setting up a cycling club.  a) I am only just learning how to ride a bike myself and b) I wouldn't be willing to put in the commitment to cycle regularly.  However, I do think you might be on to something there, but I would be reluctant to exclude men completely as there could be some non-competitive men who would benefit too.

FB. Is your general outlook on life "bend over and take it"? Just an observation(would post a smiley wink if I could)

nope - get me riled on a subject and then see the blood flow. I have to say I've mellowed in my old age, and rant less than I used to.

anyhoo - I was purely making an observation on the Asda ad

oh btw - this is what you were looking for - image

  • Gore does a huge range of cycle gear for women - pink features but so does green, red, blue, yellow etc.

Don't get me started on Sweaty Betty - it's where all my spare cash goes. Yes, the prices are high but peeps are clearly prepared to pay them because the quality and design of the stuff is spot on.

  • Asda are just doing what sells

It's a bit like people moaning that runners world should put real runners on the front instead of airbrushed models.

Running Fitness tried that. And they almost went out of business as a result.
  • Generally is supply and demand although some times what is available does skew that. I must take a look at the Olympics and see of the men and women ride different bikes actually as they may not at top level.

A lot more women are riding bikes these days though so they might need to keep up with the market although the specialist shops will do that.

Stereotypes can be a problem except for Essex. I have to go through there reasonably regularly and as far as I can see the stereotype is pretty much true, at least south of Colchester.

Careful Brooks!  I agree that some parts of Essex fit the stereotypes, but not the part that I came from!  Think Lovejoy rather that TOWIE.

  • Couple of years back, Me and Suzie were in a well known outdoor equipment retailers (Think a region of Gloucestershire) looking to buy new down jackets.

Ever so helpful chappie sorted me out an awesome piece of kit, top of the range, all the bells and whistles, at which point Sue asked him to show her what they had available for her.......  He handed her something in Barbie pink with fur round the hood and cuffs..... I thought she was going to kill him on the spot.  She pointed out that I had said we were both going to Nepal, and she needed a jacket like mine... Oh Sorry all we have for women is these.....

Poor bloke, cost him a sale, as I left without the jacket he had sorted for me.

Just had another look - 9 girl's bikes, 25 for boys...

I'm actually tempted to write to them and see what they have to say about it.

But not, presumably, tempted enough to actually write to them?
