It was the burgin big’un I had loads of crap in it I didn’t actually need in the end. Still those brownies where very tasty. Why do you think I got you all donuts and lollies on the Saturday I felt a little guilty?
How late do they serve food on the Sunday night? My relay crew will probably want to eat earlier than me but may be polite and wait, and I think that I will feel like eating after the run but anticipate finishing 9pm or later.
It's protected on three side F, with building and a big bank on the main bits..not sure if this will do enough to stop the wind but as its' used for rowing would have thought this would be part of the lakes design.
There is design error at HPP, when the wind blows it comes sideways, the rowers like it either head on or behind, that said like FF put there are banks on either side to minimise the effect of the wind
Flyaway - had something similar Thursday. Downwind was easy, upwind was like sea swimming. A fair chop breaking over my head made it hard to breathe on one side. I can breathe bilaterally, though it was very annoying.
Someone earlier posted that the outbound leg at HPP is downwind, homeward leg is harder work.
Might be worth people thinking about some sort of bike cover for the night your bike is racked. Outlaw didn't give out anything last year (not that we needed it) i know tescos do some cheap ones.
At IMW they provided covers for the bikes............but because the wind was so high......they all had to be removed as the wind was taking them and knocking all the bikes over....so carrier bag over seat and a small one over the bento box was all that could be done........and the bikes survived the night of wind and rain........
Thanks guys. So a choppy swim is a possibility. Another reason to pray for a still day!
Cat5 - I hate swimming in the sea for just that reason. I breathe bilaterally too, every 3 strokes, but it all falls apart if I try to breathe every 2, and every 4 is not enough, so I end up with a lungful of water every couple of seconds!!
From experience a small short swell develops at HPP when there is a north easterly wind. This is basically because there isn't much protection from the wind at that end of the lake and the swell can develop over the 2.3 km length. The south west end of the lake is reasonably sheltered and I haven't known a swell to develop from that end. Not saying it isn't possible though! Any other wind direction and there is very little swell.
How likely is it that the lake will be choppy? Wind here this morning is averaging 14mph and the lake I swam in was horrible. I dont like waves!
I swam at HPP last month when it was really windy but the water was not affected at all, at least not the bulk of it. It may have been affected at the far end but we weren't swimming that end but I doubt it would have made much difference anyway.
I think it will be the wind on the bike that may pose more of a problem.
If you mean Oxton Hill I road up it 3 times last year!! Nothing to worry about. There is a sign near the bottom indicating a 12% gradient, but that bit only lasts for 50 to 75 m.
I worked out some stats to stop any wibbling about it! If memory serves me right it is a 49 m rise in elevation over a length of about 650 m, the average gradient works out at around 7% or around 1 in 13. Maybe a couple of minutes out the saddle to get up it!
Once you get over the top you've got a lovely 4.5 to 5 mile descent down into Southwell!
it's nothing particularly to worry about... I did it the other week and grinded up at about 15mph... probably wouldnt do on race day but still
It does turn a bit though which could catch you out (especially if like me you chose to grind it) as you cannot see, like you said, that half way it kicks up a bit more

I thought I got blown back down the lake in 2010, it seemed easier than the outward leg.
Won't cover my saddle, my arse is going to be wet anyways.
You've mastered peeing on the bike then Holgs?!!
ha ha nope
Nothing can be as cold and windy as Bala and I have survived that a few times
Trunce with the river flooded in march?
Sorry wrong meeting.

The course still looks pretty flat to me though so it could be worse.
Has anyone ridden up the hill at 20 miles? Looking on google maps, it looks like a steady climb then a bit of a sharp rise at the end. Is this right?
