    BTF rule book states;

    9 Swimming

9.1 Competitors shall use no aid other than a cap, goggles, nose clip and costume, which may be a wetsuit, for open water swims.

9.2 A wetsuit may consist of up to three separate parts. the wearing of wetsuit leggings only, gloves and/or socks is not permitted. The maximum permitted thickness of material is 5mm. This thickness also applies to any overlap of material/s.

    From OSB's email this morning:

"If you need neoprene booties and gloves to help keep you warm, then we have no issues with this - just as long as they are not webbed."

  • At the Slateman they allowed boots and gloves (not webbed tho) but if you did wear them you were ineligible for any prizes.

(OSB email - missed the bit about booties when I read it)

the BTF rule book is correct but Race Directors have discretion to apply variations to the rules that are compatible with racing provided that a) the BTF is notified in advance (or within 48hrs if a last minute change), and that b) it's applied to all athletes.

in OSBs case by notifying everyone in advance they are compliant with BTF rules - as were Slateman (the ineligibility rule is usually applied in variation circumstances)

what you can't do as an athlete is rock up to the swim in boots and gloves if this variation hasn't been announced and expect to race.    you will be asked to remove them.

we had a right barney with a Canadian guy at Challenge Henley last year (there was no varition in place) who turned up in neoprene boots and expected to race.  he stormed off when we told him he couldn't race unless he took them off.  "I've come all this way from Canada blah blah blah...".  he came back 5 mins later wearing compression socks - so we told him to take them off (calf guards are allowed but not socks).  he claimed he needed them for hypothermia - "OK where's the med cert and have you declared this to the RD".  no he hadn't done either.  get them off then.  more argument but he gave in in the end and raced without - and finished.

  • the resulting frostbite required the amputation of both feet, but that'll serve him right for thinking he can come over here and expect to play by his own, namby-pamby, not even a proper Yank, rules image

  • Aah well if booties make you slower then I clearly dont want them !

At our local lake we've had guys in shorty wetsuits, compression socks and trainers and paddles. They do a lap in the water, then run out and around the lake, and then run back into the water, and keep repeating. Any idea what thats for ? V odd.

  • I use blue seventy gloves down here when it's a bit chilly - and even they slow me up!

they are webbed so you do get more pull - but they act like a break during the entry part of the stroke

i certainly swim much better without them

It was mentioned in another thread!!

What were they thinking about with that?  I can imagine a wetsuit with separate top & lower halves, but the third?  A nice waistcoat perhaps?

Or are they treating neoprene skullcaps as part of the wetsuit?

  • fat buddhafat buddha ✭✭✭

it says "up to" which obviously covers a full suit and no hat (1), or a full suit and a hat/2 piece suit and no hat (2), or a 2 piece suit and a hat (3)

I've seen a few 2 piece suits around but they're not very common.

  • i like the idea of an extra neoprene waistcoast - just a little more bouyancy!

  • image But without a tie? Surely bad form?

  • You could use a buff as a cravate ? V dashing.

Ooh Otillo. Never heard of that before.

  • While the rule book is out, am I ok about wearing just Tri Shorts under my wettie on Sunday? Just started getting worried about the 'nudity' intrepretations when I start taking the wettie off (tri-shorts are staying on!)

Or do I need to wear a top of some description for the swim?

  • Blast. Was hoping to leave the tri-top in the bag for the run, and wear a cycle top for the bike. Ah well, will pack a top for the swim.

    * adds to ever growing list *

    Cheers KK.

  • There is a changing tent, I haven't experienced it myself, but comparrisons with gay porn have been made in the past to describe it!! image

I believe wetsuits have to be removed before you go into the tent! image

you'll be fine without a top on when you strip the wettie off.

nudity tends to only refer to complete nudity

but best check at the race briefing to be doubly sure

  • At IMCDA they seemed to have some men heading out onto the run topless.

Maybe they had their tops in their hands - but they went out of transition bare chested anyway.

  • *wobbles belly*

I could change your mind kk

  • Topless it is then , well as long as I see a few ladies do the same
  • Nudity didnt seem a problem in 2010 they had blokes n gals seperate changing tents which were a bit crowded to say the least arses and scrotes flying everywhere
  • Does anybody have a Topeak valve extender I can borrow? The one for the non-removable cores image

Have you not got a rash vest to shove on for the swim? I would offer you mine but it's bright pink ladies xs.

Might not be to your taste. image

You had me sold until the xs came along.

I'll pack a top and ask at the briefing for some clarification. Had assumed I'd be alright without so haven't training with a top underneath. Worst case I could wear my tri suit and then get completely changed in T1 if necessary.

SE - I think I have some spares in my bike toolbox which usually travels with me.  not sure if it's Topeak but they are all basically the same.   and you should be able to get one at the TFN stand that will be there if I don't have it
