Iain - No, I was in the mood for a popcorn flick so went to see Gangster Squad. Enjoyable, but I'm certain completely and utterly historically inaccurate.

I'm not sure about Zero Dark Thirty. I'm interested, but heard some bad feedback from those that have seen it. Most seem to say its a badly written propaganda film.

Next week I'll treat myself to Django.

    I liked Zero Dark Thirty.

I have done Y800's.  I think its important to remember its best used as an evaluation tool of your progress rather than a training tool in and of itself.

  • Holy moly its rather stormy here........image

  • Feeling bleurch. Plan on feelin better soon. Agree about Yassoo 800s Dannirr. Easy to get stale on them if done frequently but useful for benchmarking progress now and then. I prefer straight reps but the most fun can be had with pyramids.

Getting ever closer. The talk of spectators brings that to reality. No spectators for me as all four of us coming are running. Touch wood, nobody on the injury bench.

Managed 21 miles at the weekend, average pace 9:50; I was concerned that having no tempo run (but a serious rep session each week and alternate week hill reps in addition) I'm slowing down, so decided to run last night's MWLR - a day early - how I felt. Pleased to report that I felt good and ran 10 miles at 8:15 pace which didn't feel too hard. Perhaps there is hope for the mid-Feb half after all.

Still wondering if I should have a tempo run though ...?
  • TD..   as a man who likes stats...  you HAVE to see this,,,,   Kilian Jornets test results...:

    http://iancorless.org/2013/01/29/kilians-test-results/

For those that don't know...  Kilian Jornet is an ultra runner who specialises in.... well.. everything!   He is exceptionally good at running up and down mountains...  quite literally...

    Absolutely remarkable...

  • Johnny - I've used Yassos in the past but I do them on the treadmill because it's easier to measure. There's something quite satisfying about them. Are you a Serpie by any chance? I know they do speed sessions round the back of th O2 (I've had the disconcerting experience of them galloping past me).

Any room on that sofa, Emmy and Kaz? I'll make fresh tea. Yawn.

Of course... I'm appearing to be stuck between the sofa and bed at the moment

I will go out for a run today, I will go out for a run today, I will go out for a run today... image

It has temporarily stopped raining.  It's still blowing a hoolie but I'm going out anyway.  I'll be back to whinge about it later.

    TD - wassup?

  • Emmy - yup, been feeling that way for about a month! January blues.

Eggy - I'd like to see Gangster Squad. But I'd love to see Zero Dark. The Hurt Locker is one of the more tense cinema experiences of my recent years, I'm hoping Ms Bigelow can match it in this one...
  • Eggyh73Eggyh73 ✭✭✭

Good luck yer_maj. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the wind will have calmed down for my run tonight (like that will happen).

  • For anyone mad enough to go out, I hope you don't get blown away! Or is it just here that is really bad?

The wind was only 103mph during the night, and now a pleasant 81mph?!?!image

  • ATMATM ✭✭✭

Wow! Wind! This morning's  ' out' route involved being battered by hail...and, pathetically, trying to hide from it behind a stop-and-wire fence. Useless. The ' back' run was wind-assisted and the fastest we've ever been..image. We were being blown to the very point of being bowled over but stayed upright and enjoyed the sensation of speed.Fantastic.

    *We don't get out much...*

  • I was planning a longish steady run myself at marathon pace (or near enough) but I might struggle on this one today.

  • E mmyE mmy ✭✭✭

It's blowing rather rabidly here as well. I was woken up by it this morning (and considering that i'm really tired - this is a major effort!)

  • yer majyer maj ✭✭✭

The Hurt Locker is a fantastic film - she's got a lot to live up to!

  • Eggyh73Eggyh73 ✭✭✭

The Hurt Locker was a good film. Zero Dark Thirty seems to be a strange one. The critics seem to love it, but apart from Dannirr I've not heard one person that's seen it say a good word about it. One person in particular I know who's seen it has a raging hated for it and tore it apart line by line, which funnily enough made me interested in seeing it as we tend to have reasonably similar views on these things.

ATM - Well done on your run this morning. It's this sort of weather that reminds me why I always ran autumn marathons.

  • Interesting comments re Yassos. I enjoyed doing them I must say, though I don't really understand how they can be an evaluation tool? Dannir? Tricky? I've read the theory but the times I were doing in minutes and seconds I'd have no chance of repeating in hours and minutes. Not without another two months of long runs anyway.

RR - No, not a serpie, never been a member of a club. But you're right, there was a big group of runners there last night - wish I were as quick as many of them!

  • Bit windy here too but I suspect it has more to do with my gluten intolerance image

Wow, they are impressive results DV. His lung capacity isn't that huge for a guy of his size but the VO2Max rating is incredible. I've heard of high 80s before but nothing in the 90s.  Also, the lactate saturation is incredible. I think I was blown out around 9-10mM/L so the 13 is incredible. HIs skeletal muscle measurement seems very high too (in proportion to body fat%) which would probably explain the extreme VO2Max.

Mind you, he'd be a rubbish rugby playerimage

  • Johnny - the Yassos are an evaluation tool because they spookily allow a realistic conversion of MMimages for 800m into marathon time of HH:mm - the fact that you find that hard to believe probably indicates you haven't run many marathons yet (?).

It's also useful as a benchmark of your own performance, simply tracking performance trend over time.  I prefer longer intervals so that you are pushing HR very high for longer periods - good for the body and makes you tougher in the mind. Holding on while your heart feels like it is going to blow certainly helps you cope with the lower but longer pain at the end of a mara (if you are pushing on hard for a time).  You can also run out the end of a mara at a slower relative pace and save a lot of discomfort.

  • We will see whether the Yasso theory works in Paris.

I do not do them every week. My schedule starts off at in one week at miles, then 800m, 400m and 200m.

It is hard work, but I suppose it is meant to be.

On monday it was a 6 miler with 10 x 400m. I was a little tired at the end. But with 13 miles last saturday and 7 mile steady yesterday, I will be resting tonight.

  • Tricky - I've run 3 marathons before. The Yasso times I can run at don't correlate with my marathon times. Then again, neither do my half marathon times according to the calculators.

I put it down to being a novice when it comes down to diet, nutrition, lifestyle, sticking to training plans etc. That and doing not enough long runs. No idea how people find the time.
  • Eggyh73Eggyh73 ✭✭✭

Johnny - All you need to do is have absolutely no social life then you can fit in all the long runs you want!

  • Gorgeous morning here, My wonderful wife is on leave so did we :-

    a) lay in bed til mid morning

    b) have a romantic breakfast

    c) spend 2 hours sprinting up the biggest hill in the village

I'm convinced she is trying to kill me off

  • I think you may well be right Eggy!
  • yer majyer maj ✭✭✭

I appear to have caught TD's twingy groin image

Went out to do 13k with some 800m intervals....and turned around after 4k.  Straight to book an appt with my osteopath tomorrow.  This marathon training is doomed, I tell you... image

  • I ended up going for a run on monday (4 easy miles) and have since come down with flu. Not a mistake I'll be making again! I'm feeling better today than I was yesterday but I've called in sick so I can hopefully get back to 100% ASAP!

yer_maj hopefully your twinges can be sorted quickly by the osteopath, your training looks like it's been going well up until now!

  • DannirrDannirr ✭✭✭
Iain - it's funny, even though you know the outcome in Zero Dark Thirty, it is every bit as tense as the Hurt Locker. I don't see it as a propaganda film at all - it's a representation of a real event, and the torture shown in no way makes the Americans look good. Nor does the killing of innocent women. Quite the opposite.

The thing about Y800's is that the mm.ss correlation applies if you are able to run the 800 in in the LAST of 8-10 repeats at your target pace. By then you are pretty exhausted. So if you can only manage your target pace or 4 or 5 repeats, you will not manage to meet your goal. That's why I thnk it's an evaluation tool of your progress as generally, as your training progresses, you'll be able to do more repeats at target pace.
  • Eggyh73Eggyh73 ✭✭✭

Must be the year of twingy groin!

Megs - Take it easy. You want to be well rid of the flu before resuming training.

  • we're not called "The bench" for nothing Yer_Majimage
