  • NCane2 - and others -

As I was gearing up to compete in quite a big race many moons ago, I confided in my training partner that i had doubts and fears about finishing.   And his reply was something that always stuck with me:

"You're thinking of the race as a test, it's not, it's a celebration.   The race isn't hard.  The hard part is getting your ass out of bed on cold mornings to go running .   The hard part is finding a plan and sticking to it and pushing yourself to do training sessions you would never have thought you could do just a few weeks earlier.    The race is just simply a celebration where all the people who've put in this hard work come together to celebrate the achievements they've made.   That's all it is.   You've done the hard part, now go have the fun."

It totally changed the way I think about races.

Ian - Our system is experiencing higher than normal volumes.  Please try your request again later.    I am also confirmed for MCM.   I'll be living in DC at the time.   Maybe see you there?

  • Agreed Rick.... 6am this morning wasn't nice. With luck a week on Sunday will make it all worthwhile
  •  === Did you forget something? ===

I've put my name on the master list of numbers with ATM.  I told her to pass on a message that if anyone forgot something odd at home, give me a call and I'll see if I can help you out.  If you forget toothpaste, there are plenty of stores around, or socks can be found at Decathlon or GO Sport, but if you need something weird like a micro allen wrench to fix something, we've probably got it here.   I've got tools and parts galore.   Test me.  I'll be at Pasta Papas and under the arch, so just let me know.   Or, if you're looking for something else, we might be able to point you in a good direction.   Remember, EVERYTHING in France is closed Sundays.  Excpet IKEA, so if you need a lamp, you're all set.

Also, my wife is fluent in English and French, so if you get in to a situation where you can't be understood but need to be, give us a ring and we'll do what we can.

That's such a great offer, Rick. Please thank Fanette for all of us. I have your numbers. * Anyone else who wants to add theirs to the Mobiles List, please email your to me. I'd like to be able to circulate the list on Monday.* And +1 for the approach to the race. Once you stop thinking of any kind of test as an opportunity to fail but rather the chance to show what you can do... image

Welcome to the new people. You'll have a ball. Hang on, the injured/sick. A few days rest and lots of adrenalin can do wonders.

IM2, I am so jealous, I can hardly eat this chocolate bunny...

Peter Burke 5, I've sent you my notes but they may go direct to spam. image

  • If all goes well in Paris, I'm thinking about Barcelona too. London might be tempting too if they want me! Like the idea of a spring marathon, helps pass through the winter months
  • The shops on the Champs Elysées will be open on Sunday, Sephora is worth visiting (like Boots without the chemist bit) and so are H&M and Zara.  There is a Disney Store (rather you than me ...) and an English speaking chemist.

A good open air food market is rue Mouffetard, behind the Pantheon, but it is closed on Mondays.

2 restaurants that are open all day Sunday are Chartier near the Grands Boulevards and the Brasserie on the Ile St Louis.  ATM and myself have refuelled (and rehydrated copiously) in both of them after races.  Most brasseries will be open all day, good for sausages and sauerkraut washed down with beer.

Top tip:  do not have your passport stolen, the Consulate will only issue an emergency one at great cost on Monday ....

Oh, it is such a good idea not to have all your cash and cards stolen....image But, if that happens, you may well be rescued from the streets by a threader.Divide your valuables and hide half of them...Oz-style.

  • DannirrDannirr ✭✭✭

My valuables cannot be divided - I was born that way.

Thank you Jimbob and Dannirr. I saw on the 2012 results that there is a video of runners at the various chip points, it's linked to my Asics site.

IKEA and shops on the Champs will be shut at 8:45, so we might as well go for a little run.

Rick - I might test you on a tool if I knew what they were called. Or those chocolate biscuits from IKEA. Hopefully our wives can sit together at the pasta party as mine is very fluent in French but a bit shy in English. I haven't spoken to her in six months, well it's rude to interrupt!

Taper madness well and truly set in now, after the three day bender in Torquay (which I'm finally alive again from), I'm feeling kinda un-arsed about next week, it comes and goes but guess thats just months of slogging out the miles taking it's toll. I'll be buzzing for next week.

May also be a factor that I seem to have put on a few lbs from the weekend and my shins are playing up again (plus a few other niggles), hopefully a few days of top-notch nutrition and a physio appointment next week should see me right.

On the talk of Barcelona, I did it last year and it was FANTASTIC! Couldnt recommend it enough and will be happy to fill folk in on the details in the boozer on April 7th.

Oh, and the Rocky films are TOP! Reckon the second and the last (Balboa) are the best but the 4th installment with Drago is my favourite for pure entertainment value!

  • The two training Montages in Rocky 4 are just awesome. So ridiculous and cheesy but i LOVE THEM. When i'm running along to Hearts on Fire i feel like a jet taking off from a runway - its a fxxking adrenalin rush MAN.

Whilst it's good to take great care don't be afraid in Paris. I feel a lot safer there than in the Uk and in my 6 years living there I met very few threatening or scarey people on the streets.

The nicest you will all meet though (no offence intended to all the other regulars) is ATM. A nicer lady you could not wish to meet- even Mrs OO said so!

  • ATMATM ✭✭✭

That's so sweet, OO. * I guess this is not the time to rip off the face mask...as in' V'. Anyone else remeber that series? Scared me half to death. It must be on youtube, somewhere..*

Tartan The Brasserie looks just about perfect - I'll be trying to shoehorn my entourage of 10 into somewhere on late Sunday afternoon....might have to send the two teenage boys ahead to lie on some tables....image

I love ATM too, especially in her leather miniskirt.

  • I hadn't realised that there is a long tunnel which lasts about a km, in which it is more than likely I will lose coverage on my garmin 205 forerunner. I remember reading something recently about having a foot one. Could someone be kind enough to advise as to the best way to proceed so that I wil be aware of pace and time during or after. Does garmin reconnect when one comes out of the tunnel and then update pace tc? Thanks
  • Hi ATM

Received the email, many thanks but unfortunately the last 2 attachments open as blank word pads.

This may be due to my lack of IT smarts.image

There are loads of portaloos on the start and the goodie box kept me going when all shops closed during Hurricane Sandy!

Read that too quickly TP. Was wondering to myself for a second why they would have loads of potatoes at the start.

Better than me. I misread "poem" for "porn"! DLR I blame you entirely.

Iain, check out the poem on the Whitley Bay parkrun fb page.

Very jealous of you lot- a naughty w/end in gay Paris!

How weird, Peter.I'll try something else.

I'm still laughing at Dannirr's post..

The head receptionist then told me they could book me in for an examination, give me their certificate signed and stamped, and charge me £35 - possibly by next Friday.

Suze - make sure it's the certificate that's on the Paris website that's signed, not one the surgery's cobbled up. Hope you get sorted. Eels - v jealous.

    Hi Ncane2 - you'll be ready.

Iain, Rick - Congrats on getting into MCM. There's loads of potatoes at the start apparently. V wise words from your friend Rick.

Simon - good to hear you're up and about. You won't get lost. I managed to navigate my way through Paris without any problems, and if and idiot like me can do that, it must be easy.

Hi SK19 - Thanks for that - just playing it now. Liking the first track. Who's the singer? Only 207 minutes? I'll have to listen to it twice on the run image

Alexander - if you get a footpod, when the signal is lost, it automatically switches to the footpod (or at least it does on the 610), then when signal is restored, it automatically switches back. No need to press any buttons. You have to calibrate it when you first get it (ie by running a known distance like a mile on a track). The pace readout won't be affected when it's switching back and forth between the two. Not sure what happens to pace readouts if you don't have a footpod and go through a tunnel. Someone tried explaining to me but I couldn't get my head round it.

Seems like we might be gearing up for a "Paris Thread does Barcelona" situation here....

Aaah, but who get's to be Manuel? 'I just die here'....

  • Thanks ATM email arrived safely.
