In short, is this possible without jailbreaking the phone?
A friend of mine is working away from home during the week, and being a tight-wad, they don't want to pay the prices of hotel wi-fi to access the web on their laptop, yet they have a data allowance on their phone.
I can see from googling that USB tethering (or using phone as a wireless modem) is possible from iPhone4 upwards, but is there something similar for iPhone3 without jailbreaking?
The phone is outside contract and outside warranty so could be jailbroken if necessary. If I decide to try this, how easy is it and what do I have to do
Thanks

Says to ensure IOS is 4.3
But have a look here for info http://www.techradar.com/news/networking/wi-fi/how-to-set-up-an-iphone-personal-hotspot-964105
You also need to check your data contract with the phone as most Phone complanies will charge you an additional fee for tethering. When I was looking (just over a year ago) in the small print there was around a £6 charge for tethering in addition to the "free" data allowance on at least two different company's contracts.
