Protein Shakes

Hi Everyone

I recently got back into running after a few years gap. I was never a long distance runner but I did do 4-6 miles per session. Now after a few recent months of training I'm back up to running 10k with ease on every workout and I now want to start going further.

I read somewhere that after a workout one of the best things to drink afterwards was a milkshake. The article I read, said just a shop bought milkshake is as good, if not better than any of the specialist sports drinks available.

The ones I use are the 472ml bottles Yazoo milkshakes, advertised as high in protein and low in fat. Per 100ml it has 65kcal, 3.3g protein, 9.9g carbs, 1.5g fat. I drink one after a workout.

I also used to make my own shakes which were 1 pint skimmed milk, 5 tablespoons powdered milk and a bannana all wizzed in a blender.

I'm interested in what other people use?

Thanks in advance.

  • I enjoy chocolate protein shakes post workout, I have no idea if they help with recovery I just find its a great excuse to have chocolate in the name of training, I take peanut butter sarnies and mars bars with me on long cycle rides for much the same reason. For me I like to get as much fruit and veggies as I can down me during the week and plenty of fish chicken/turkey and the odd steak while in training.

  • Chocolate milk is just as good as a protein shake so save your money.

  • Exactly. And I'd probably not bother after a six miles. My millshakes are saved for long runs or races.

I use MYPROTEIN vanilla total protein powder and water. (I dont't do milk!) I have one after my long run (13M +) Maybe its placebo but it seems to help with recovery of muscles...it tastes good and I like it!

Most of the recovery labeled drinks are 3:1 carbs to protein. You achieve the same with the likes of Yazoo. The only time I worry about recovery is on long runs and post races. I usually arrive home for breakfast after long runs. I rely on something suitable in the goodie bag or take a milkshake is I'm at a race and unlikely to be eating within 30 - 40 mins.
