safety pins were fine in cycling events i did but it was raining in my 10k and i didn't want to puncture running coat or my lovely long sleeve top - i am vain
most people had their jackets on and you couldn't see their numbers - i guess they thought the same about puncturing their waterproofs - well they're not entirely waterproof really
I might get one and try it though. My last race I forgot to bring any safety pins and was staying with my parents, and all my mum could find in her whole house was two GIANT-sized knitting safety pins and two tiny little ones from clothes labels. I was lucky we could muster four of any size really.
Like the dude says. If the conditions mean you need to cover up (eg winter fell race), pin the number to your thigh. I haven't tried this when wearing shorts though. From a marshalling point of view, number belts are a pain - the number is often almost impossible to read.
The trouble with pinning the number to your top before putting it on is that it is easy to pin through both layers. It's a lot easier to do it when you are wearing the top. Its also easier to get it in the right place. For me positioning is very important as I am short in the body. Too low and I have to put up with it making irritating noises whenever I take a step, too high and it gets me under the chin.
I've not yet managed to stab myself with safety pins. I can't even imagine how you would do that and my boobs are enormous, as already proven with photos
Does no-one else secure it to their vest before putting it on? Saves a lot of inadvertent stabbing.
Tried this once, before realising that the risk of ripping the number back off when putting the top on, and the number not quite "sitting right" took away any advantage.
when we as a forum cannot, without vitriol, agree on which part of the foot we should run on, you must conclude we could all start a fight in an empty room
how to pin the number on in itself sounds pathetic, but when you put it under a folder marked "making yourself comfortable", then that has much bigger racing effect
Thq longer you've been running, the more extra angles you have to consider to keep taking time off those pbs!
I can remember turning up to a half early on, no warmup, big baggy shorts, heavy trainers, no specific faster work, or thoughts on the monstrous course in front of me.

At least we'd all agree that the foot is the part to use.

i put it on my left thigh. two on top and one on bottom.
Staple gun
One in each corner - but it can be a bit tricky to get it right if you have lady bumps
pin in each corner.
If you feel a sharp pain in your skin, you've done it wrong.

get a racebelt, only a few quid and you'll never have to bother with pins again. Some racebelts can hold gels too.
Who gave you permission to discuss my boobage David?
Yeah, well I've got a PhD.
Ah, you're just jealous cos I chicked you on my LSR.
Doesn't the bottom of the number flap around if it's windy? Otherwise they look good.
belts?

Ah okay, maybe your speed does...

With the blood and fat of my victims.
Pinned to thigh (on my shorts).

aye me too. it's not as easy as all that.
Who would have thought that pinning a number on a vest could be fraught with such difficulty?

In some ways I miss those days

Steady on guys. This thread is getting dangerously close to Ricky Bennison territory!
