I played alot of Cricket with a mate who was in the police force at the time. He always looked back on Thatcher with fondness. He pointed out that the overtime he earned during the miners dispute had paid for his house extension and conservatory.
Whilst he used to wind me up ( not difficult in my youth) there was a huge element of truth in that.
As far as benefitting from selling of privatised indistries goes.. ok things were different back then, but haven't we just paid huge somes of money to buy shares in many banks after the privatised, deregulated industry kind of lost the plot?
Hmm, I'm not sure you can slip the banks in with the privatised industries like that.
And I have it on the best of authorities (Gordon Brown, who is on record as saying it several times) that it wasn't the UK banks that lost the plot. They were brought down by the US banks that lost the plot. I think that needs to be remembered.
I alsoi heard an interesting comment on R4 just now, that I had forgotten: Mrs T was dead against the privatisation of the railways.
to me privatisation of the railway is not a major issue.you can opt to use a railway or not....
for the vast majority of people you can not really choose if you decide to have water, electric or gas.....
but they made the government a fortune and now we pay the costs.......
For all of the people who are posting their anti Thatcher views, there must be some people who liked her because otherwise how was she PM for so long? I thought there would be more supporters, as well as haters posting.
(And I don't know, because I was too young to vote until her last term of office.)

I expect they're hanging out on the Sun, Mail and Telegraph websites.
They had a section on the radio here this morning about her (Northern Ireland in case you don't know) and here public opinion is massivly divided as well - particularly on her stance on the hunger strikers and the Good Friday Agreement.
In a coffee shop....two papers on the table...one heading...the woman who divided a nation. The other. The woman who saved a nation.....wonder if they are talking about the same person
Probably Seren ... It seems to reflect the national opinion
Mousey, strange you mention the supporters not posting, I've read this thread and have come back to it a few times, as is very apparent she was and still is someone who divided opinion. I worked with her and knew her personally for a number of years at a time when politics never interested me (and still don't to a degree)
To me she was a good person to work for, a good mother, a good wife and a very strong person who was a role model for women then and I believe now
What I see here are people voicing opinions and very strong ones at that and some that I don't think are appropriate but I have not lived their lives perhaps no more than they have mine ... It's difficult to voice support against this when my experience and opinion is personal
I do believe, having read that none of her implementations have been reversed since she left government and I do wonder if most of them would have happened without her under any other government

What was the name of that hit-suquad the police developed?

SPG?
Yes, thats it, Special Patrol Group.
It's what Vyvyan in The Young Ones called his hamster
Ah yes, Blair Peach.
They also used to remove their numbers so they beat shit out of people with no comeback.

Maybe being a runner makes you a lefty?
NO, but it would have come in handy if the SPG were after you.
That's a rather sweeping statement there chloella

Pudge - I did wonder if the running community were a skewed demographic profile!
I wonder what she was like in the sack?
Obviously in her younger days.
Bossy I should think. Same as she was out of the sack.
avoiding work on a website makes you more likely to be left wing?
nope .. just more likely to get the sack
One can only hope!

Depends whether you were Labour or Conservative.
SHe did a bloody good job of taking the power away from the unions after holding the country to ransom over strikes.

To me, she was my boss
Politics aside, surely her hair is worth a mention.
A very strong coiffure that appeared to be sustained in all weathers.
made of iron, you know
The staff at Elnett will be in deep mourning I'm sure. She must have been their best customer.
