I've taken the plunge and entered the UK Backward run in Manchester. Can't wait but bit nervous. Anyone else fancy it?
If like me you're a bit scpetical check this out http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-1389790/Want-fitter-Running-backwards-way-forward.html
I've tried a few short runs and it really is a good laugh and my quads were killing me. Don't think i'll do it all the time but there could be something in this...

I'm not surprised your quads were killing you - they're not designed to run backwards. Try dragging yourself forward by your fingertips too - you'll get all sorts of aches and pains from it. It doesn't mean its any good though.
I'd heard most Daily Mail readers have trouble running forwards.....
I disagree with you on that one. running forwards isn't exactly good for us either! how many runners can claim to have never suffered injuries. besides runnng in the opposite direction does work different muscles and can correct imbalances. There's a fair bit of academic research showing how backward running is a more efficient way of training. just google
But i do agree with your comment re: Daily mail - usually a load of rubbish
Neutral gait?
and I guess you're one of the lucky ones or are you young enough yet to not suffer from all those of years of road pounding!
managed to convince a few of my cynical friends and entered a team for the uk backward run. suddenly we are all trying to better our 400 metres backwards time. 90 seconds ain't bad forwards never mind backwards! apparently the world champion is taking part this year.
I've read the Daily Mail article, and tried it out, but I keep on veering wildly to the right. Was there anything printed in the Guardian?
Tried a little backward running when my calf goes tight after too much forward running but about 20 yards is enough. 20 miles would give all sorts of injury problems I guess
hi muggle,
great that you tried it. you've earn't the right to critcise backward running now!
backward running is a great warm up and down drill
i would never do more than 1 mile backwards. More than that sounds boring and def more risky as you switch off. I run backwards to give my lower limbs a nice counter-balance, stretch my back and put some quickness into my legs. i usually do a few 200 metre reps and when i find m rythym it feels awesome.
looking forward to the uk backward run in manchester. hoping to dip under 8 minutes for the mile course. the course record is around 6 min something which is hard to believe.
hi hallam blue - do you veer to the left when you run forwards!
sounds like you need to start off with backward walking until you've got your co-ordination then slowly build up to jogging. maybe you're too tense?
2 weeks to go ))) Can now run a mile backwards in 8 min 23. Very excited.
Bet you cn hardly contain yourself.
make that 8 min 16... hope to break 8 minutes on the day. anyone else tempted.... there really is alot more to reverse running that you think. i like the fact that it works all your lower leg muscles and gives you a good balanced workout. but above all its fun and a good break to the drudgery of 5 mile training runs.
I've never had a 5 mile training run that was a drudge.
Lucky you. Guess you have a high tolerance of repetition. Personally my training runs are close to race pace so a chance to break the routine, give my body a rest and some recoup and do something different is most welcome.
how on earth could your training runs be close to race pace.....if so you are obviously training wrong....
and if you are running at race pace then you wouldn't have the energy for iot to be a drudge.you would be trying hard to breathe and not throw up
So are you an expert then. What are your PB's? I run clever. Plenty of rest days and ALL my sessions are geared to improve time. I incorporate lots of ideas in my running, Reverse running just one of them. Ever tried aqua-running or do you think that's daft too? I'm 40 and run 17 min 5K's. Not bad me thinks and i'm getting faster
Ah... The old I do more rest days than training days...and when I do run, I run backwards..... Your watch run backwards as well ?
Do you aqua-run backwards?
don't be silly, he holds his breath and sprints along the bottom

Except he's called James Bamber and lives in Devon. And you live in the South West. Oh...... you don't think do you ?
Is he your long lost twin ?
Or have you been less than honest in trying to plug your own event ?
I cant find any Ned Merrill running 5k in the UK. Isn't that odd too ?
He hasn't got a mate called Vince Reebok has he ?
Brilliant detective work Cougie.
Come on Ned... Fess up
Surely he wouldn't be thick enough to use a made-up name but the same picture?
...oh.
Seriously, just who do these plonkers take us for, huh?
