jon - I use MTB spd's on both my road and mtb bikes so can use the same shoes on either. Shimano M959's on road, older Specialized on MTB.
Time ATAC are good but they have more float (15degrees I think) which doesn't help to keep your knee in line if it's a bit wayward like mine so I switched to Shimano type (only 5degree of float).
