In need of getting a new turbo trainer (recommendations welcome) but have also been thinking about rollers, I have never used them but they do seem less hassle being able to plonk your bike straight on and to being able to use different bikes, anyone use them or are they best left to just warming up before racing?

I've got an elite mag alu turbo from halfords, was 129. it works with trainerroad so was happy with it.
I've been researching rollers recently (there are a few threads about them on here) and decided just to stick with the turbo due to the rollers with variable resistance being far more expensive and the turbo seemed better for what I want.
I've not used rollers so am only basing this on research.
I have both turbo and rollers and use them both at different times but get more use out of the turbo. I find I can 'switch off' a little on the turbo but with rollers need to keep concentrating. Very good for developing balance and core but out of the two I get much more use out of he turbo so for me if it was a choice between the two definitely turbo.
Team sky are always on turbos warming up rather than rollers.
I'm looking to get a turbo soon. Kurt Kinetic are the ones to go for. I like the look of the Road Machine, but there is another one that has a 'realistic' out of the saddle motion that may flick your switch also.
The unit is guaranteed leak free for life- something which I've read affects most units in the end.
Haven't used rollers since I was a kid. Was good fun, but not as useful for overall training. Prepping your bike for the turbo's only going to take a few minutes, once you've got the hang of it.
Yep, like switch off your brain. A moment's inattention on rollers gets messy quickly.
Might not be a bad thing, being on the turb does have a habit of making me switch off I do find it a bit on the boring side can't normally do more then 1 hour at a time
Or get rollers but use a fork stand for times when you want to switch your brain off?
Anyone got any specific recommendations? I live in a flat so need something that isn't TOO noisy.
Expensive but the new Elite Turbo Muin direct drive looks great, but as brand newI clearly haven't used it myself. Reviews suggest it is very quiet indeed, and with direct drive you can do low cadence power intervals etc too.
Yep. The Kurt Kinetic turbos are quiet.
The kurt kinetic does look good, but I can't find cheaper then £299 ant that's a little steep at the moment.
Wow the elite turbo muin looks amazing....bit on the pricy side, although I seem to say that a lot and end up getting things anyway...
Just found the Kinetic Cyclone for £149 and I've got VAT to come off of that yet, did notice it does not have adjustable resistance, anyone used one.
Boring? Do some intervals or something that makes you hurt/puke. I have to switch off to numb the pain
Mine makes hardly any noise, makes a difference if you have a turbo tyre on it.
Fan rather than fluid or magnetic trainers tend to be very noisy Jus.
I do remember people telling me this years ago, thought maybe they might of got a little quieter now days.
Have you seen the elite one at halfords? It has 5 resistance levels. £129 last time I looked.
Not fancy but is magnetic and I've had no probs.
Actually, the one I have is down to £97.49. They have a bunch a TACX ones as well.
I have remembered I have an Elite Mag Alu too. It does the job.
As Im desperate and need something soon I've just ordered the stealth black trainer off of planet x, it only needs to get me to the new year and then I can replace if its not completely up to scratch, £79.99 delivered and with the VAT knocked off.
Rollers all the way - any easing off and you fall over, so its a good way to get sweaty very quickly indeed. I have a set of Cyclops rollers which has an optional resistance unit, but I can hardly push the pedals in top gear so no need to waste your money on that.... or more likely I'm not fit enough.
