You're talking to an old Dead Kennedys fan here Phil.
That Ever Fallen in Love version in the advert killed a great song. They seem to be playing their CD in every crappy gastro pub murdering song after song from Blondie to the Communards.
Top prize from me to Pudge for 'Step On' - kicking myself for missing that one.
Honourable mentions too for Phil's 'Dub Side of the Moon', 'My Way' by Sid Vicious, and Whitesnake's 'Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City' - used to love a bit of Dave Coverdale and John Lord when I was in 6th year.
Sussex - yes, I agree some of those tunes have been way over-played and the bossa nova treatment can get a bit tiring after a while. I'm not familiar with the Dead Kennedys' version (sorry!) but there's something rather appealing about the coquettish vocal on this one.
All about opinions Phil and I decided at the start of this not to criticise anyone's taste in music(even Phil Collins) but the criteria was that the cover should be better than the original. So being familiar with both versions essential
Sussex - you're right, I hurriedly read your original post as suggesting that they'd simply never made a good cover, rather than a better cover. Anyway, upshot is I've been introduced to the original now, so it's all good.
OK, late entry. I Don't Know Where I Stand, Fairport Convention (Joni Mitchell).
Again it's about the voice. I love Joni Mitchell but prefer Sandy Denny's treatment of this song, and the arrangement.
More Siouxsie vs The Beatles for you BBB, how about Helter Skelter? Far better by the Banshees, if you haven't heard it, check it out on YT. I saw them loads of times a long time ago, great band!
Colin brings up Fine Young Cannibals, good band but guilty of one of the greatest crimes to cover versions with their slaughtering of the Buzzcocks' 'Ever fallen in love'...
andy x - I didn't know about Souxsie and Helter Skelter. Good stuff. And maybe it was the make-up, but... here's a cheery one before I go off to the pub:
Diamanda Galas - My World is Empty Without You (The Supremes)
This thread caused me to search this out. Had this on a tape given to me by someone some time of my adolescents. Cover of Bod Dylan's Goin' Goin' Gone by Robin Holcomb and Bill Frisell.

Some great suggestions here.

I like the Les Baxter version but not entirely sure who had the original Unchained Melody.

Ah, now this is the Land of Confusion cover I'm familiar with. Katzenjammer, my favourite Norwegian all-girl band.

These don't really count as the originals are pretty good anyway, but covers worth a mention (in my opinion) :
Ghost Rider (suicide) - covered by Soft Cell & Jim Thirwell
Every Dream Home a Heartache (Love) - covered by every man and his dog, but my favourite is probably Boo Radleys
Song to the Siren (Tim Buckley) - favourite is a toss up between Cocteay Twins and This Mortal Coil.
Just like Heaven (Cure) - Dinosaur Jnr
Mother Sky (Can) - Loops
II'll stop there.....
