If youre getting just one bike don't buy a TT bike.  A road bike is a jack of all trades, you can use it for training, hilly courses, sociable rides, sportives etc etc.

A TT bike is more specialist, not really suited to hilly courses, they also tend to be lighter and more skittish to handle.  Youll also look a berk if you only have a TT bike and want to join group rides.

TT bikes by geometry are little less comfortable, on the front you only have tribars and bull horns so not really suitable for sitting up.  Its enough of a challenge for a newbie to acclimatise/strengthen muscles in the arms, back, neck for long rides without restricting yourself to an aero only position.  A road bike gives you much more option in terms of riding position, handlebar grip etc.

Road bike - but reasonable quality so it will take a pounding - hearing that loud and clear.

Adam Fat Buddha has a rugby background, and his weight is not down to fat, so maybe you're fitter than you think. The running is the one that can cause injuries, so just go easier on that and put in bike and swim miles initially. IM marathons aren't fast affairs it's acceptable to run/walk.

Yes, Adam you deffo need a proper Pirate handle, don't take too long on deciding or you'll be named anyway, a certain other person did that and he ended up with being called Gladys!

Adam, youre certainly a braver man than I. I started my tri career this year with a couple of aquathlons and sprints, next year I intend to do a few more sprints and few olys. Perhaps a middle. I say I'll be HIM'ing in 2015; But like others have said its all about what you want. I could do an IM this summer but when I got to the end (when not if) Id say to myself "now its done I wish Id done it in under xhours" and be annoyed I rushed the training and prep.
