my (clearly superior) other 'arf keeps bringing the subject of a tandem up, and a little bit of touring...
I quite like the idea, and have been browsing....
Anyone else got one and care to share experiences where one rider is perhaps, if he's completely honest, just ever so slightly, a teensy weensy little bit competitive?....

I'd love to get one too, so I can go for rides with my road craft poor wife. I've been on tandems a few times- a few years back. It's very easy. I'm always horrified at the cost of one. If you spec a bike to about 105, you'd be looking at a bit over a grand right? Same level on a tandem would be more like £2500.
Oh, and I don't think a tandem is the right place to be competitive with your tandem mate.
yeah, but I won't be spending anything like that kind of money!
We'll buy a cheap-ish secondhand one from ebay or somewhere and see how we get on to start with... if its a success, then maybe over the winter we'll invest in something a bit better.
You'll always win by half a bike length as long as you don't play stoker.
Quite a few deals on ebay (I looked just a few days ago, funny enough). If you're drawn to doing it, I would say go for it. It's a fun thing to do.
I know, but if I end up as pilot, no matter how hard I work, i'll never be able to open up a decent gap...
I know someone who had a MTB tandem that they used to take into the tracks at Swinley Forest. I think the comment "interesting!" was quite common from people who tried it.....
me an Petal have toyed with the idea of one as we are relatively comparable in speeds and ability - might even do so in a couple of years when we are ready for some new challenges
I don't think you need to be THAT close in ability to ride one together. It's not like you can pedal faster than the other guy
of you are competitive they have TT in which tandems can race
And tandem track races !
I've been thinking of getting one as my other half doesn't ride a bike but she is into running and she does watch pro cycling so I think it's a good idea - she doesn't because she thinks it'll be scary !
Yes I was racing someone...
It was fun whilst it lasted. I'm no good as a stoker though - I was turning the saddle of the rider in front. Oops.
turning the saddle?.... flippin 'eck!
Better make sure I'm pilot then..... i've just bought a tandem.
Wow, cool What did you get?
Wonder how fast FB will get to with twice the horsepower? 70mph maybe? That would be a hell of a speed!
Its only a cheap one.... a Viking Saratoga... OK gears and discs.. a bit heavy, but gets OK write ups... will get something better if we get on OK with it.
