evening, Hippo read your report 2 years ago and after doing race support last year I can understand what you were saying about conditions etc.
Thats why I've printed out the entry form for this year Look forward to actually meeting you at 4am on the moor as I've read a lot of your posts and the helpful advice youve given other people.
Hippo, took a group of peeps from our running club to the start at 4am then drove from checkpoint to checkpoint to see them through. had all their spare gear in the car for them. ended up pulling one girl out of the race at 35 mile mark as I could see she was in a worse condition than she thought.. Enjoyed the day so I thought that I would have a go this year.
It kinda sucks you in this thread doesn't it ?? One minute your happy reading about normal events, then wallop, you're trying to look at the practicalities of a 42 mile hill-climbing, vertically challenging, bog-hopping extravaganza ( however you spell it ).
Certainly a good one in the middle; but unfortunately if you manage to reach that during opening hours you will be pulled out as you will have no chance of completing within time. Can think of worse places to retire though. Just to cheer everyone up though; we have had one of the wettiest winter's for a while on the NY Moors and the ground is more than a little soggy. Still it has 5 months to dry out. Still some places left if anyone still hasn't made up their mind. For some strange reason though we have had a lot more early entries this year than normal. You can't be doing a very good job of frightening people off Hippo! At this rate I'm going to need a second bottle of Gin; or you'll have to share. Already have you down to start first Hippo. If you are going to have company I will need to know the names on the entry forms. e-mail me when you have things sorted.
still trying to work out the logistics of how to do this without a car - can probably get myself on the bus to to Osmotherly YHA the day before (is that reasonably nr the start?).
please can anyone offer a lift to the train station afterwards? (nearest is in Ruswarp 7 miles away, i'm going back to York).
Oh flippin' 'eck. I'm really considering this now, to the point of getting clearance from the wife. It's your fault, Hippo - just read your Draycote report. This has haunted me since almost completing the route (not the race) last year.
So, seriously, how do you get from the finish back to the starting car park to pick up your car? Or how do you get to the start if you've parked at the finish?!
This is a serious question - I need to get the logistics straight before I start worrying about costs, lack of map-reading abilities etc. How do people normally manage it?

you have no idea of my fear of heights and falling
Where did you do race support

Not saying I'll do it but I'd need to know the practicalities first.
not everywhere they dont
especially if you end up on the MOD bit of land-mobile no go zone
