  • SL - thanks for the heads up on the tunnel race - am now entered. Love your vocabulary lesson....hmnn we could add many more to that.

Julie - love your description - I remember once asking a complete stranger for some water (they had a bottle in their hand) - thankfully they were supporting the race...

NRG - will try and find out more about fingallians AC for you....give me a few minutes...
  • I'm going to tell my Mammy that ye are all picking on me.
  • oh honey we'd make sure you weren't in it before we dynamited it..... :-)

do you not think that it would be a poignant reflection on the inherent futility and transience of the human condition? er.......
  • Hey leave the little fella alone. Sheds is serious business Sheds
  • those sheddi are weird.....

    i'm scared now.....
  • Thank you Dai for your kind words of support during this difficult time.

The Cabin and I thank you.
  • Right, I've spent a couple of days thinking about plans for next year and I've decided I want to really go for a Boston qualifying time and do a tri. This knocks the Ultra off teh map for now but maybe next year...

Anyway I'm planning teh Kilkee tri which is at the end of June, so that leaves me space for a Spring and Autumn marathon. Autumn I'm not looking at yet but I'm looking for a fast(ish) race in Europe between late Feb and May. Paris and London are out and it has to be somewhere interesting for me to bring family to. Easy to get to (Ryanair) would also be fairly important.

I'm thinking Rome or Barcelona. Any comments or suggestions?
  • Seville is mid Feb, fast and it's a good city to visit...Ryanair fly there too....
  • And the flights to Seville (if you fly on the right days) are cheap as well!
  • Rome is reputed to have one of the best godie bags going.
  • Do the Vatican supply those godie bags?
  • Hmm a small piece of the wealth from the Vatican in each bag...........Could be worth while as long as it is something from Michelangelo or Leonardo da Vinci (And I am not talkingabout the teenage mutant ninja turtles)
  • Ok, update on my dodgy knee. Saw the physio this morning. After much measuring and walking slowing and the such, I've been diagnosed as having one leg shorter than the other.... Feeling a bit like a freak of nature.
  • the woman is eveil by the way..... Has anyone got experience when they start doing that stuff they call massage, do they stop if you actually start sobbing rather than grimacing and saying "it's a little tender isn't it"???? Actually wanted to pass out in there this morning.
  • SL,

So are they saying that is the route problem of the knee?

The reason I ask is that most people have one leg shorter then the other, but by differing degrees. Some people seem able to run without any problems while some require inserts. Or it may be that your hips or lower back may be tilted due to problems in these areas and thus casuing and inblance in leg length......

And I may aslo be talking a lot of waffle as you have heard this all before......
  • It's actually quite a noticable difference. She gave me inserts. I've got to start wearing them 1 hour a day and work up. Al the muscles are a bit funny from the inbalance. I've got some stretching to do this week and going to a miomechanics specialist in a while.
  • Cheers - Rome appeals a lot to me actually, great route by the looks of things.

I'll give Mrs A the list of alternatives and let her pick I think (so absolving himself of all responsibility)
  • I was told that I had one leg appearing to be shorter than the other but that it wasn't really, it was cos my pelvis was tilted and for £600 they'd straighten it (chiropractor lady)

So now I guess it's straight - has stopped my shin splints, but not my ludicrous propensity for other injuries.

Has also saved me from the curse of having any spare money in the bank....
  • My physio only wanted 45 euro fo fix me and my health insurance covers it anyway :-)
  • Evening all *warm fuzzy feeling*... back from Belfast with new running shoes, socks and a belt/bottle thingy to try out.

The girl who runs the shop came first in Dublin (well first Irish girl), boys but she's skinny! They were really nice and we've talked them into doing the Mooathon I think!
  • evening.... I'm off to get new shoues tomorrow too.
  • my first pair of Brooks...so comfy!

I do worry about the postal service in Belfast though! MrGFB and I were walking through Belfast looking for "Up and Running" and getting lost (as usual) and asked 3 separate postmen directions and none of them knew where the street was!

I found and internet phone and looked them up and Bob's you mother's brother!!

I have to say that this video analysis of your running is the only way to buy shoes...I eventually had to buy *blush* men's shoes (hobbit) and went through about 6 pairs til we found them.
  • I see entries for next year's Dublin Marathon are open!

    *hhhhhm tempted!*
  • Giller - thanks for that. I'll follow up the contact.

GFB - she was running 100 miles/week when I was up there. No wonder she's skinny (and fast!). Re gait analysis - I'm not convinced that running a few hundred yards on a treadmill is really going to show how I run outside in real life. However, open to ideas. Interested to know if your new shoes make a difference to your sore feet/legs. Could have told you where the shop was!

Definitely not doing Port Tunnel. Too soon. In a tunnel. On a Sunday am (see previous posts).

Amadeus - there was a review of Rome marathon in RW UK mag a few months ago.(just checked: July 06). If you don't have it I'll scan & e-mail it to you. Gripe about chip falling off (225 lost) and mention of some cobbles. I think it's scheduled for 18 Mar & reporter said that by 12:30 (9.15am start) the temp was in low 20s which might be a bit of a shock in March! However, he said even with cobbles & heat it was a fast course.
  • NRG...I agree that the gait analysis probably wouldn't suit everyone and in a busy shop you probaby wouldn't get as good attention as you might need...I had MGFB watching the screen saying to the man...

    "rewind that....no, those shoes don't suit...new shoes....play that slowly, no those shoes don't suit...look she'll still blahdeblahdeblah...rewind it slowly...play it again...run slower GFB...try those with a different insole..."etc!!

Probably not everyone got the attention I got!!
  • Amadeus,
I'm planning on doing Rome. We are going to fly down on the Friday and do some sightseeing. Saturday Italy are playing Ireland in the Six Nations... have booked a couple of tickets for the game. Marathon Sunday and celebrate St Pats a day late on Sunday night. Back to Brussels Monday.
  • Ok, I went out for my post-mara run this am. I was itching to get out, lovely cold, windy am. Hadn't got out all week and thought I was going to go mad. Bad news. My knees hurt! They were really sore at the end of the mara but took anti-inflamm that night and next am and then only quads were sore which I expected. ONly ran about 2.5 miles, mostly on grass, and they hurt. I could cry. Booked assessment at gym on way home with view to some sort of cross training. I take glucosamine/chron?smthing already but it does feel like a joint thing. Pls don't tell me this is going to continue. But if I rest too long I might forget how to run and I'll get really really grumpy esp in next mad weeks in pre-Christmas rush. Ok. Gripe over. As hubby says, better now than 2 weeks pre-mara.
