Very painful foot

Help needed. After running for about 4 or 5 miles I get the most excruciating pain in my left foot. Its on the ball of the foot and I can only describe it as being like when your sock is rucked up, it feels like I'm running on a ridge. Sitting down removing shoe & sock plus a massage will relieve the pain, but a couple of miles later its back again (usually by then with a similar problem on the other foot!). Anybody got any bright ideas as to how I can overcome this? Don't really want to be sitting down too often on 13/4 as a pacing group will just become a distant memory.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Sorry to hear about the foot. I dont really have any suggestions but if I was you I would rest it and maybe make an appointment with a sports injury specialist. If anyone can sort you out they can!

How long has this foot problem been going on for?

    Best of luck.

Do you get tingling in your toes, and does it feel like a stone under your foot? It could be the start of a morton's neuroma, see a podiatrist for possible help and ice it. It can need surgery if not sorted out early!

(ps I'm a GP who has had this - no surgery just orthotics were required)

    Good luck

    Phil

Could be Plantar Fasciitis. See the Health tab for details.

If this is neuroma or plantar fasciitis, there is not much you can do before FLM to cure it. I would advise rest and ice in the hope that it will calm down, and maybe some anti-inflammatories too. Hopefully it will then settle enough to allow you to get round, and you can deal with the cause afterwards. Too late now for orthotics etc

Is this a new problem then?

Thanks for all the advice. Yes, it is a new problem 'coz I've only been running since 1st Jan. It really came to light at Silverstone and again at a half in Stafford 3 weeks later. It comes on when my feet get hot and, I suppose, start to swell. The shoes are OK, or at least I think they are, I'm going to experiment this weekend with slightly larger socks. As you say, if there's anything serious I've absolutely no chance now of gettting it sorted before FLM.
    Good luck to you all.
I'll be the fat, bald headed guy at the back wearing 42357!

I went out running on Sunday and got a similar pain after a couple of miles for no apparent reason but it would appear now after seeing a podiatrist that I have pulled the muscle which runs between my little toes and my heel, should be ok for the day but there is nothing like putting your mind at rest, get down to the doctors.

Phil. I had a similar problem last year, felt as if the ball of my foot had no protection at all and bone was hitting tarmac - ouch! Anyway, it turned out I had "seed corns" which were removed by a chiropodist without any pain, and since then it's been fine. I think the corn is like an upturned traffic cone so the sharp end is a real pressure point and hence the pain. There would be time before FLM to visit a chirpodist and get it checked out....good luck, Amanda
