Numb Toes & Cold Feet

hi folks, when i was running during the summer and autumn i kept getting numb toes, i had bought new nike running shoes, when i went running or on the treadmill i suffered from numb toes for the first couple of miles , i tried barely tightening my laces, tightening them a little more than i had been incase it was friction, different sports socks to cheap sport direct karimor running trainer socks. Nothing helped my numb toes, does it sound like my trainers are causing this or is there something i could do to remedy this??

i am also having problems with cold feet on the odd occasion i have jogged in the winter, i wear a hat, thin fleece, shower proof karimore running jacket, gloves even tried 2 pairs of socks.

so can anyone help with my numb feet and cold feet problems

The most common cause is that your shoes are too tight. You may well have tried your shoes on in the shop before buying and found them to be a comfortable fit but when we run our feet swell. Most runners go up one size on their normal shoe size. If you have done this, are the shoes still too small? Too narrow maybe?

Socks and lacing you have already eperimented with.

Other than that you may have poor circulation, a trapped nerve or poor body / running posture.

Cold feet during winter is an occupational hazard. How bad is it? I have Raynauds have have recently taken to taking Adalat to get me through winter runs.

Soak your feet in a basin of warm water before you leave the house so that they are already warm and give them a massage. Put your running socks on before you head out so that they have warmed up - running shoes as well.

If your running shoes are too tight it will make your feet colder because you are resticting the circulation.

When you put your running shoes on there should be a goodly amount of room between the end of your foot and the end of your shoes - about a thumb width.

Hi,I have numb toes and cold feet at times, mine is called by raynaulds phenomenon,a circulation problem.

I have to make sure my feet never get too cold, keep them moving by wiggling my toes or else they go from translucent to black if left undealt with, could this be the same for you?

It's a pain as they can hurt sometimes,I get it in my fingers too but more so in my feet,it happens for me whatever the weather but colder makes it worse.Evenings are spent keeping feet moving and wearing thermal socks, even in bed.

I used to have a pair of trainers that made my toes numb. They were ever so slightly on the small side and my problem was solved by moving up a half size. I'd imagine that sometimes the problem might not just be size but rather that the particular shoe just doesn't suit you, no matter whether you went up a size or not. Good luck sorting it out - cold/numb feet is a miserable feeling...

I suffered from cold feet last summer, but not while I was running, just the rest of the time! The doctor was at a loss, it wasn't circulation, and she sent off some blood tests, which were negative. Then I got ill and stopped running for a while, and the problem went away. Whether it was a precursor to the illness or something else I don't know. Not sure if it's relevant, but I thought I'd share!

sorry for the delay folks i was busy

camilla, i tried the shoes on in the shop and they were a good fit, a tad snug on the width but nothing i would say would block circulation. I have no idea if my running posture is good or bad lol. I think i have poor circulation, when my feet get cold in the house they stay cold, i can put 2 pair of socks on and slippers and they dont heat up unless i heat them up or they do eventually thaw out. So im not sure if that could be an issue. Ill try the basin of water before i go out running. Is there a particular type of sock or socks i should use in the winter. The running shoes i have are more or less completely mesh so not good for keeping in heat.

flubble - my toes or finger dont go a funny colour, i even get numb toes on the treadmill in a warm gym. I like going out in the fresh air but i need to find a solution to keeping my tootsies warm lol

noanie - i dont have a shop where they specialise in finding you a suitable running shoe, i went to sport direct and i had read about this nike pegasus trainer as being good especially for folk with a high arch like me. At £54 i cant afford to buy another pair to find out.

"...i even get numb toes on the treadmill in a warm gym..."

I think that there tells you it isn't a simple outdoor winter temperature issue.

I appreciate that not everyone has specialist running shops right on their doorstep and that most people can't afford to just ditch a new pair of shoes that aren't quite right, so as long as you feel that these shoes aren't actually damaging your feet or legs, you probably won't do yourself any harm in wearing them till they need replaced. But for your next pair, it might be worth planning a day trip to a good shop for fitting advice.

The bowl of hot water before you go out running is a great idea - I do that sometimes as I often have cold feet indoors and  find that if they're warm to start with, they tend to stay warm even when the temperature outdoors is well below zero. I also keep my trainers beside a radiator so they'll be warm when I put them on.

ill try the basin of water next time i jog outdoors and maybe a little warm up too.

i was at the gym tonight and on the treadmill, i had thin sports socks on and i left my laces slack so there was a little movement in my trainers, the treadmills were busy so i did 15mins on the bike first then 35min on the treadmill, my feet were fine, so i dont know if it was because i left my laces a little loose or the warm up on the bike helped.

Have you tried running on the treadmill in just your socks?, it would tell you once and for all if it was a shoe problem. Gyms don't like you doing that but if you explain they will help you out.
