I worked in South Kensington from 99-2008 so often did the LFOTM - years ago when you could buy a voucher from Run and Become and then just rock up. Until it started to get really popular and you had to enter in advance.

Anyone run the old course that started nearer the Albert Hall? You started down Rotten Row and then at the end as you came back up the clubhouse you had to run down RR, across the sand and back up to the finish. The new course is better.

seems the way with a few of those sort of lower key events SC

Right, I fancied 600s today, first thought was 7x600, but then checked the old 5k plan, and it reckoned 8x600 at 3k pace off 2mins.

Decided 90secs was plenty so went ahead.

Skimped on the strides a bit, and thought i'd cruise into the session.

First rep 1.59 showed I wasn't in the right place at all, but it turned out ok after that!

    1.59
    1.54
    1.57
    1.54
    1.53
    1.54
    1.55
    1.55

So we got there, 1.55 average in the end, will have to check how that stacked up against a previous go. Probably a little slower.

Clocking i was only just under 1.20 pace for the first rep was a wakener! I know they say "ease in" rather than smash the first rep, but that was cruising in!

I don't know if it's a psychological thing, but the reps ending on the start line, rather than the 200m line felt a bit better!

Appalling traffic, to my desk, minimal stretching, quick shower for 9.15! Bearing in mind i left home at 6.40ish, shows i'd really need to get going if i did longer reps/mileage. Although 90secsx8 just for the recoveries builds it up

SG - Another decent mileage week and another solid 13 miler! And nice reps this morning image  (I got about 51 miles last week I think).  Should have been 55 but I took Sunday off instead of doing the planned 4 mile recovery run.  Re: the narrow pace margin, that's just the target pace set by the coach.  There's always the caveat that it's based on flat terrain, good conditions and should be adjusted accordingly.  Pretty much all my runs are hilly or at least undulating, so I just try to run to those paces and accept if I'm not firing on all cylinders on a particular day, it could be a bit slower, but more often than not, I hit the target pace.

Ric - Good hill session.  Re: my long run - no easy day in between because it's what the training plan said.  To be fair, I was cruising at low 7s for the first few miles, then I was holding onto the low 7s without much discomfort until I got stopped by a dog walker to ask if there was anyone else on the old railway line (!).  Momentum crushed and that's when the ascent really started - just couldn't get the legs ticking over after that.

Reg - 14 hours sounds like a lot!  And impressive running at the end of a night out!  I don't drink anymore so I do often wonder about pitching up to nights out in running gear and running home...  Haven't ever done it.  Last time I remember trying to run during a night out was on my brother's stag night many years ago.  I decided to run to the next pub as I'd lost everyone.  Stumbled and nearly fell.  Rather than realise that running wasn't going to work, I then continued running and face planted in the middle of a busy street.  Scraped the side of my face on the pavement etc.

Dean - pretty good to knock out a (relatively) comfortable 5:30 ave. 5k!

PMJ - good long runs going on there.  Is Bramley a 20 miler?

Bus - good long run too (and big week!).

SC - well done on the gold!  Good solid racing by the sound of it!

Did 4 miles on my new treadmill last night.  Supposed to be a recovery run - pace target for that at the moment is 7:22-7:32 pace, which is way faster than I've previously ran recovery efforts, but I went with it. Or so I thought - I did a quick google and 13kph was apparently 7:25/mile, so I stuck that up on the treadmill.  When I entered that into Garmin/Strava, it came out as 7:17/mile.  Oh well.  Another 6 treadmill miles this evening planned.  Life kind of getting in the way this week, so there could be a few treadmill sessions.

Just popping in to say congrats to SC for HH nabbing our Southern Vets title off us!  image  And a really strong individual performance.  We were a little under-strength with our best guy coming back from injury, and one or two usual candidates missing, and we ended up missing out on team bronze by the tightest margin.  I was reasonably happy with my run, couldn't keep up with the HH train but finished 13th in what seemed like a very strong V40 field.

That was 3 of 4 XC races on consecutive weekends (3rd in the Kent county vets last week), that and some consistent mileage, averaging over 70mpw for the last couple of months, has got me back into reasonable form. I've ducked under 70kg for the first time since pre-Berlin last year and *touch wood* no niggles to speak of, so I'll continue training through the XC over Winter, and should be in good shape to start ramping up for a sub-2:30 assault for London.

Cheers Boy! Yes a nice surprise to actually run well after a few 'meh' performances. One of those where you start off steady and suddenly realise that you are running OK. It was a little glimpse of what we have been missing without Mr Paviour in our V40 ranks. Glad to hear you are on the way back - are you doing Berlin too or just going for London?

I was going to pop over to sub 3 to say hello and also congratulate Padams on his storming Chiltern lge at Luton. Are you doing the SOT Senior on Saturday??

Ric - I think the PP shorts are getting even shorter from what I saw on Saturday image Good reps SG and running CC

  • Options

They're the same shorts. Maybe I'm just wearing them higher these days?  Hmmm...

Yeah, we're hosting the SOT Senior course on Saturday, and I'm already looking forward to the Harvey's Sussex Best afterwards. (Not as cheap as the South London clubhouse but not bad!)  If I can nail London it will definitely be my only marathon next year.

So are you lot actually going to field a V40 team for the Southern relays next year?  Do I have to stay fit for another 9 months?  image

  • Options

Ha ha - Yes PP we might actually turn up for a change..you never know, looks like Ben P might come back into the fold a bit more!

So is the Harveys in the cricket club? I can only have a couple, got to get to Luton for our training xmas meal thing

  • Options

Yeah, I think it's Harvey's and Old Golden Hen, plus all the lager-y shit. And ham, egg and chips seems to be popular but I've not tried it. I'll probably cycle there so will be pretty sensible as well.  Even Stuart's threatened to stop at four.  image

PP, you guys might want to watch for other challengers ... both TippTop and I will be 40 by the time of the Southern Relays, as will a couple of others.

I've been ill for the last four days, so running has ground to a halt, as has looking at this thread.  Will have a read back in due course.

That's unfortunate Dachs, though best to get it out the way before Christmas and 4 days off will see you come back EVEN faster image

7M xc starting in the dark this morning. Was a bit unpleasant at first given yesterday was work Christmas lunch day. I don't think it was the 5 pints and half bottle of wine that caused the problem, more the enormous cheese board served far too soon after after the full turkey job and a big starter image. Finished off the evening listening to a fire alarm test in a Wetherspoons. They couldn't work out how to switch it off so after 15 minutes of aural pain I decided to drink up and head home when my ears felt like they were bleeding!!! Probably did me a favour....

Annoying, Dachs, but hopefully just a standard one. I remember starting one year off with a 11 day run free zone! That was really a wipeout mode!

I admire some of you guys who fit lives into your training. I basically live round the training, chatting on here IS my socialising, and apart from the odd long drive, it's well set up!

Anyway, 8 today, 6.49 job, felt better than last Wed for sure, which felt a bit fatigued.

    Back Friday

CRM appointment has come through for next month. Same as MRI that I had mid year last year.

Gets you a little concerned, but it was expected, albeit late spring...

Hopefully they don't find that what i've done in the last 6months has caused more damage, as that'd be gutting having at least done 10 races from 1mile to 5miles.

I'll hold off on being too positive in the end of year review just in case!

Just a routine follow up presumably SG?

Hi Scott - good to hear from you on here. Let's hope next year is a vast improvement on the one you have had this year - its about time!

    Where is everybody???

Odd session today. Found myself in between meetings in High Wycombe, so did a 7 miler of laps round the Rye including 3 x 1M off 90 sec on the HX measured mile. It was supposed to be 4, but the legs were clearly not up to it and I cut it short. 5:56, 5:50, 5:56. Not an easy mile as it starts with a slight incline and has a tight, somewhat slippery turn at one end that really slows you up. That and avoiding dogs, swans and old ladies!

  • Options

Scott - Your little girl ok now - knew she was in the hospital to sort her eye out, hope it went ok. And that her old man might be near running soon!!

Good reps bus. Doing nothing today and tomorrow, like I did last week before a xc. Probably the sensible thing to do and all that..

PP - So Stu won't be peeing in the street again LOL. Dachs - ah. Not more fast V40's...loads of them suddenly flooded the market...

Bus, yes to the first question!

And now you realise why i don't do sessions round the Rye, you used to always say it'd be a great route.

    It aint image

Must be quite risky on the pavement right next to the swim too image Nicely kept with though.

Chrimbo team meal, ate some stuff. Could never be like some of you eating types, don't like that bloated feel!

Who are the eating types? Is that code for fatties?

Hope you'll be running soon Scott. Are you still doing the cycling, not seen much on Strava lately?

    Nice reps Bus.

I had to hobble home 8 miles in to a 10 miler on Tuesday, my foot is hurting. I think it dates back to when I twisted it and Lit told me to rest it or it might become a problem image

Shame as I was cruising along in the 6:00-6:1x zone. I think the run home in casual trainers set it up.

Will be interesting to see how all the old hands on here cope with the revamped forum when it happens image

I did my first ever speed sessions on the Rye, but to be fair it was around the grass rather than next to the pond!

Thanks Simon. Yes, very sensible image. As for the tsunami of V40s coming on, I've just got to hold on another 18 months to get away from the category - there can't be many in their late 40s wishing 50 would hurry up and arrive image

Cross post Reg - foot sounds a bit worrying if its an old one coming back, but I'm sure you'll do the right thing with it...

A poster called Mr I managed to absolutely obliterate their security and hack accounts and formatting, so when they announce stuff like changes, it's inevitable we'll hate whatever they do at first.

Remind me, who's done the Fleet Half? The website says "gently undulating", but is it fast??

I'm looking for an alternative to Wokingham to have something to aim for next year.

Just found out Cliveden XC is full too - bugger!

  • Options

Just notice, new course for Fleet so that doesn't help, though it does say "faster, flatter, last two mile" Just hope that doesn't mean "hillier, slower first 11 miles" image
