Oh damn I've been rumbled, I don't really own a rectal thermometer :-D
Yep, honestly, I really don't think (personally) that jelly stings are that bad. On a positive note, they give you something else to think about when you're tired and your muscles are hurting! And jellies can be quite pretty if you ever get to actually see one.
Anyone interested in swimming in the sea around the UK should not go to wikipedia, look up 'weaver fish', and then read the symptoms section. Absolutely not. No sirree!
And if you do, don't blame me!! I warned you not to go there.
HI Mrs P, I had my first UK sea swim yesterday, sunday and it was great. I did have a wetsuit though, so didn't feel cold at all. Did feel disorientated though, which was a little of a concern when I came out of the water and was wondering if this is normal?
yep - it was P who put her hand on a submerged cormorant last summer.......freaked both of them out - but the chances of that happening must be so remote that it's unlikely you'll ever hear of it happening again..........
Mermaid, probably a combination of having been colder than you're used to (after all your face and head aren't in the wetsuit and that's where you lose the most heat from) and also going from horizontal to vertical (especially if you happen to have low BP).
In my case, I tried for years without a wetsuit, but couldn't get beyond 25 yards. For me it isn't a case of how far before it is worth putting it on, but put it on or don't swim.
yep - just grin and bear it or wear some sandals and throw them to a supporter just before you get in........most shingle beach tris will have some matting in place for the exit point - certainly at Seaford they do.....
I think the biggest danger is "death by jet ski"...........there are some eejuts out there causing mayhem and I was nearly taken out by one a couple of years ago........
I did my first sea swim tri this weekend just gone at Bude. I had a salty taste in my mouth for the first half of the bike!
The swell is fun, you get to go up and down like a roller coaster ride, well ok a mini one!
And you kind of feel like you are lifted out of the sea as you go over the top! But as it was my first one I reckon it felt much higher than it actually was! Probably about 2 inches of swell rather than the six foot I thought it was at the time!
The beach run is interesting, especially when a bit dizzy and trying to multi task by getting wettie undone and off top part of body. Who ever said girls are good at multi tasking. I could be found having a right old wetsuit battle and stagger up that beach!
All great fun and really looking forward to doing another one now. :0))
the trick to the salt is to remember it 2 hours later. Do not poor a cup of fresh water over yourself on the run when you have dried salt on your face. stingy eyes are not fun.
I'm slowly getting used to this swiming lark. I'll never wnjoy it but the blind fear is leaving.
Jellyfish are really pretty if you snorkel. If you get a weaver fish sting, you should stick affected area in really hot water (hot as you can stand) - this messes up the poison.
I usully feel dizzy coming out of water - I think it's something to do with having been sloshed around horizontally for ages.

:-O
Perhaps you swim further than me! It barely seems worth donning a suit for less than 30 mins in the water
I have fear.
Are you allowed to wear neoprene boots in triathlons?
Guess I'll do Worthing anyway. You only live once. Death by Weaver Fish would be a dramatic way to go...
I've paddled in sea for years

If you know anything about them, do you know if wearing a wetsuit is allowed?

In Tunisia we were told to put tomato on jellyfish stings.
