RW BTN 10K Training Schedule

I feel like starting training properly again so thought I'd aim at a 10k in July - with a 1/2M in September - thinking the 10k training wouldn't involve training much over 8 miles max. I've just gone through the RW Training Tab above for 10K training schedules & am really surprised at the high mileage of the long runs involved in the 12 week BTN schedule;-

week 1 has a long run of 10miles,
wk 2 ...11M
wk 3 ...12M
wk 5 .. 12M followed by 6 x 50m
wk 6 ..10M + 6x50m
wk 7 ..13M + 6x50m
wk 9 ..13M +6x50m
wk 10 ..13M
wk 11 ..10M

You know me...(!) if a schedule says do something - I'll do my best to try it - but is it really usual to have a 13mile run so often in preparation for a 10K race? Is this how you all train?
