Need a good sports injury specialist...

Will also post this in 'Injuries' but not sure how many of you go there so...

As some of you may know, Mrs RB suffered from a tibial stress fracture last year...it was apparently quite a biad one (for a stress fracture) and necessuitated 5-6 weeks in plaster and slow rehab..

Well...she has had a some shin pain in the last month and has had an X-Ray, which shows another stress fracture in the same place...

We thought it was a one off but this has now got us rather worried...she has paid to have a bone density scan and this may show up an issue there but if it isn't then we need to find a good sports injury specialist to see what else we can do...she did see a podiatrist last year who (inevitably) sold her orthotics that did little or no good at all and may have exacerbated the situation...

So, does anyone know a suitable specialist within reasonable distance of Banbury, Oxfordshire???

Any suggestions also, gratefully received..

Cheers,

RB

Sorry to hear about Mrs RB.... not sure if it's too far, but i had some excellent therapy dished out by the Josaphone Lawson Clinic in the City (London)... who cleared up a badly ripped calf and ITBS on separate occassions. The physio I used had been the physio who looked after the England Ski Team so knew a fair bit about leg and joint injury. Not sure how they compare on the price scale as I get treatment through a work sponsored health care plan, but may be worth a look... www.cityphysio.co.uk.

    Good luck

I use the Northampton Saints and England (and British Lions) Rugby team physio.  He is (apparently) the most qualifed physio in the world (seriously!) and has his own practice in Northampton (about 40 miles from you).

His name is Phil Pask, and his practice is called Witty, Pask and Buckingham, Billing Road, Northampton.

If Leamington and Stratford aren't too far I rather like my sports physio - he has practices there - used to be Cov City's physio and is a runner so very sympathetic - Andrew Holbrook

Phil Pask - top bloke - but Ex-Saints physio Coops but still with the England setup

Cheers Coops...I may take a look at that...I also owe you an email...

Maddy, I know Andrew quite well as he practises in our village as well...the trouble is that Jo (Mrs RB) has seen him (last year when she had the previous fracture)| and he doesn't appear to know what the cause is...

I guess I'm thinking along the lines of gait analysis, remedial exercises maybe change of running technique etc...that's if it isn't a bone density issue...

    morning RB

when diagnosed with the stress fracture, did the Doc say which type? generally 2 variants: posterior/distal tibial stress fracture (top or bottom 1/3rd of tibia affected) or central/anterior tibial stress fracture (middle front of tibia). due to Mrs RB having a plaster cast, it sounds like a Central/Anterior Tibial Stress fracture. These, as you've found, heal poorly.

have you tried the Oxfordshire Physiotherapt and Sports Injury Clinic? Kate Badger specialises in musculosketal work and liaises with orthopedic consultants which is what I'd look for if I had an Anterior Tibial stress fracture (plus she's also a triathlete so should understand what your end goals will be)

as an aside, where does Mrs RB do most of her training? road/treadmill/grass tracks/etc. treadmill might be beneficial during her rehab phase as there is less impact on the lower limb from treadmill running (better cushioning) (the geeky article)

here's hoping for a speedy recovery

I would recommend (though it'll be 45 minutes up the A43 to Northampton for you -- although not that far for the best treatment) Witty, Pask and Buckingham.  They're probably the top sports physio/injury outfit in the UK and their client list runs from the Olympic team to the England rugby team and beyond.  I've been going there for an Achilles problem and these guys are very, very thorough and well informed.  Google them; they have a very informative website.

    ATOM.

As you suspected, it is an anterior stress fracture pretty much in the centre of the bone...

She runs on roads almost exclusively.

We are going to take a lot of care with her rehab this time and we will be going to see one of the recommended people on here....

I suspect that her gait may be part of the issue so we are looking to get a thorough analysis once she is able to run again...

    Cheers for the suggestions..

Another recommendation for Witty, Pask and Buckingham, especially Mark buckingham, physio to the British olympic team.

RB, if your wifes problem is bone rather than soft tissue, I would recommend Dr Cathy Speed a specialist sports physician who practises out of the Bupa Cambridge Leas hospital at Impington near Cambridge. If you want more info, google her name as she has a website. She very good but very expensive.
