Editor introduces Basso diary Ivan Basso writes diary for Cyclingnews
    Photo ©: Roberto Bettini <a href="http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos.php?id=/photos/2008/oct08/japancup08/japancup082/bettiniphoto_0031597_1_full"> <img title="(Click for larger image) " src="http://www.cyclingnews.com/photos/2008/oct08/japancup08/japancup082/bettiniphoto_0031597_1_fullalt.jpg" width="200" height="200" /> </a>

Welcome to my first editor's comment. I'm here to unveil Ivan Basso's exclusive online diary. You don't need to point out that there would have been easier, less controversial topics to begin with, but like a plastic wrapper to an adult magazine, this was a necessity – not a legally-binding one, but one borne out of respect for our audience.

Over the next year Basso will be giving you an exclusive account of his return to the sport and his search for redemption. He'll document how cycling has changed since his ban; the peloton's reactions towards his return and of course his new transparent aims on training and racing. You can also expect snippets of analysis from his coach, Aldo Sassi.

I hope Basso's diary will deliver an insightful glance into the complex and often far too secretive lair of a cycling superstar. Yes, there are easier, perhaps softer riders we could have worked with but whatever your preconceived opinions of Ivan Basso as a rider and human being, by Sassi's and other accounts, Basso's talent and resolve will soon reposition him right back at the pinnacle of his sport, its biggest races, and hence public consciousness.

As a news-based site it puts our publication in a difficult position. You'll ask, and rightfully so, where does Cyclingnews position itself on matter of banned riders and their quest for redemption? Does this contradict a desire to cleanse cycling? What about the riders Basso beat, do they deserve more?

If anything, I hope our site will always be there to inform, challenge and entertain our readers. I'd see that not as contradiction, but rather that Cyclingnews relays a spectrum of all-encompassing opinions. Where we're not afraid to ask or answer tough questions of our sport and where we try and leave you, the reader, in a position to make up your own minds.

That cheater at Florida also had no recorded splits on the bike and run, lo and behold he had no splits last year either, what a coincidence, and you will never guess 2006 also!!!! Whats the odds on the that then!!!!  lightening does indeed strike not once but three times for Mr Finmanimage

    So he's done a 1:30 swim, about a 10:30 T1, then wandered across the finish line ?

Priceless - here's his race report from 2007. The bolded bit at the end is particularly ironic ...

"The morning started at about 5am… Your just sitting around waiting and waiting and waiting for what seems like hours. I finally got down to the race site at 6am to get my last minute things together…. Make sure all my bike and run stuff was all situated and that I had everything I would need for the day ahead of me. Its all there so I head to the beach.

Its now about 6:55 am. and 2200 people are just standing on the beach in wetsuits staring at eachother and the ocean. Its a pretty amazing sight to see this many people laser focused on the journey they are about to set out on. At exactly 7am the gun goes off and 2200 people jump into the ocean like maniacs… As big as the ocean is, there seems like there isnt any room at all to move…. People are kicking and pushing and an occasional shot to the face is not uncommon. The swim is 2.4 miles– and let me tell you,, it aint easy. But 1hr and 26 minutes later I successfully make it out of the ocean….. On to the bike.

The bike ride is 112 miles…. and it is nearly 80 degrees down there. So I dont have to tell you, but that is pretty hot. The bike took me 6 hrs and 17 minutes, which was 10 minutes faster then last year for me… And for just about the whole time your on that bike your leaning forward on the aero bars, basically resting your weight on your forearms…Completely strecthing out your back and your stomach is almost always tight as it could possibly be. And if your wondering is it uncomfortable??…. let me clear that up– YES IT IS !!!!!!

Onto the run… Now running a marathon ( 26.2 miles ) by itself is a feat…. But to have to do that after swimming in an ocean for nearly 1.5 hrs then biking for nearly 6.5 hrs,,, your talking 8 hrs of pushing yourself to the max…. and now a comes a run…. That really sucks !!! I did the marathon part of the Ironman last year in 5hrs and 32 minutes,,, so I was very focused this year on crushing that time….. Long story short– I did the marathon in 4 hrs and 54 minutes and my total time for the day was 12hrs and 55 minutes….. Crushing last years time of 13 hrs and 48 minutes. And yes, I will be in pain for the next few days…. But its worth it..

Its not about the actual race of Ironman–Its about being the person you need to be in order to do something like this… Its about being so committed towards a goal that nothing can stop you !!!!!

Well, I live to race another day
    "

Oddly, no sign of a 2008 race report ...

    Weird eh :

2008 - no bike splits but 6.01 on the bike. http://www.nasports.com/results/splits/imfla/imfla2008splits/imf2008bikesplits.html

I guess his chip magically failed ?

And you can see he's made a consistent improvement :

Inspirational. He should run for Vice Prez in 2012, they clearly let anyone in, and don't mind a bit of cheating ...

I didnt see finman but I saw someone using a snorkel!

Why do these people bother, surely cheating would leave you with no feeling of accumplishment.

Maybe it was the same fella who did (or rather didnt) FLM dressed as a clown?
  • Options
I had enough trouble carrying what I needed let alone fins and a snorkle and an outboard as well
  • Options
I think you can use a snorkel legally - some people have problems with head/neck mobility. I'd think it would be harder with a snorkel just to get the breaths out.
  • Options
Hang on, Meldy are you saying someone used an outboard things as well as the cheat with fins?

    it was poetic license  image

Did you think you'd been rumbled then Carl ? image

    Almost

Ive always looked forward to a good rumbling with Meldy image

Damn I screwed up Florida and got my butt kicked by a Pirate yet again. At least this time it wasn't Candy image. (Yes Candy, I still keep an eye on here, even if my typing fingers rarely venture to the keyboard)

Well Done all. Awesome time Jo.

I did shout out to a Pirate on the run course and made it back to the Finish Chute to cheer Barly in but that Mike Reilly bloke was stood right in front of me shouting "You are an Ironman" and his microphone was louder than my knacered voice box. Well Done Carl you flaming nutcase, or as they say over there (all the time) Good Job!!! image

Zuppy had issues with Mr Reilly also. 4 hours of "You are and Ironman" got to him.

We got home this morning. Had trouble breathing for a couple of days after the race but was too scared to go to a USA ER because of horror stories about medical bills that run into millions. Decided it would be cheaper just to bury me out there! Felt much better by the time we got to Orlando and back training aimlessly now. Going to have a couple of weeks going easy. Anyone know how one trains for the MdS?

The approach I'd advise for you Smiley, is to start running with a very high mileage, then increase it a lot very quickly, when you start to get injuries, ignore them, increase your mileage further till you get ill, then post about your injuries, be scornful of any concern expressed and then complete the race in a seriously impressive time.

It's worked before for you and I'm sure it will work again! image

By the way,  I need someone to collect my finish t-shirt (I'm an optimist) and hand my flare back after the race as I cant hang around, any chance you could do this for me? The organisers are okay with it.

    Thank you
