Actually...whilst on the subject and before I part with my dosh...could anyone recommend whether I should go for the Endura Air Defence jacket or the Gore Phantom Jacket...or any other recommendations?
rattie I wasn't, I was out in the scottish wilderness
I was lying though
I was wearing trishorts with quality aldi running tights on top, smart wool socks, overshoes, a long sleeved tshirt, a fleecy cycling jacket and a waterproof jacket, decathlon silk gloves and some cheapo aldi gloves on top and my pirate buff on my head. I was plenty warm enough.
or less seriously, for winter kit suggestions maybe contact little fat welshman at www.likeys.com (or through the forum). what he doesn't know about cold weather equipment isn't worth knowing. unless of course there should turn out to be any valuable facts that he doesn't know. but that is probably unlikely. try him anyway.
I think my suffering on Friday was more from windchill than just the air temperature. I did an hour on the bike today and wore a normal zip-up jacket and I was toasty warm... so.. this suggests I need to look for some proper winter kit as what i have is obviously not suitable. Thanks for the suggestions on here.. definitely some things for the xmas present list...
and another thing, if darth vader was so in tune with the force, how come he never noticed the millennium falcon coming up right behind him along that trench? i mean, it's ****ing massive. totally unbelievable.
Ratbag - re the jackets. Sorry for the delay, but I assumed that after 20 posts there wasn't a lot of chance the thread was still on topic. Anyway, personally I always just got for a waterproof shell outer, and then a non windstopper inner. I find that this allows me to control the warmth much better than a single layer. I find that whatever they claim, then they don't breathe when you're cycling at any real speed, so that you need to vent, and then my neck / chest gets cold and back and shoulders stay too warm.
we checked out the Tchibo and Lidl skiing kit at the w/e - jackets/saloppettes are good value for money (but I'd like to see how they stand up to pissing rain - not that well I suspect) but some of the other stuff is cack and wouldn't do the job - one type of glove was OK and probably good for winter riding as they were fairly light
for anyone starting out skiing or a relative beginner - bargain
P came away with a helmet for £7 - kids size as adult ones don't fit here - for the number of times she's likely to use it, that's a bloody huge bargain!!
thanks D74...I reckon I might have to work this out for myself as I get far too sweaty wearing a waterproof top...I was planning on a windroof top with one or two layers...I do have a showerproof top (cheap from JJB) that I intend to carry around for ig it gets a bit wet...but I normally head for home if it rains too hard....
cougs...nah...I reckon they look gay on everyone but I CBA to get any more so I'll just have to live with the gay look....
I have some Marmot "super duper go down to -273C sort of" winter gloves for skiing and mountaineering - they are the mutts nutts and always keep my fingers warm
Marmot do superb kit - just not easy to get hold of in the UK
RB - I sweat competitavely What I do is vary the zips to stay at teh right temp. So sometimes this means the zip up on the waterproof shell and almost fully open on the inner, or vice versa. A lot depends on if it's raining, windy, and the air temp. If you do go for one of those then let us know how you get on.

So nobody can help on the jacket choice then???
...apart from LFW...
Bib shorts may appear a bit gay but really they are very cool as they dont fall down or cut into your tum.
I theeeenk you'll find that the original pirate shorts are just about the pinnacle of Gayness.
Apart from Faris al Sultans cropped top.

Hey hey - Aldi are doing Skiing stuff this Thursday - gloves and jackets galore. If they cant keep you warm, then nothing can. Probably.
