Caz - if the mouse is too fast you can change the speed.

Control Panel, Mouse options and then pointer options if you're on XP, probably similar for other OS's.

I've never used an optical mouse, I don't know if you can adjust the hardware, but you should be able to counteract the speed up on that control panel.
