Well... I'm b*ggered if I can think of 10 reasons why not......
So.... here we are.... I decided just 1 month ago to quit my 20 year, 40 a day smoking habit, and perhaps do a bit of running to try and recuperate my battered lungs....
...and to assist my efforts, I thought i'd perhaps take a look at a running mag..... and then noticed that they have a forum.... and then joined.... I'm now running a gasping, wheezing 2.5miles 4 times a week...
....and so back to my story....... noticed this section called Tri....containing this (to me) strangely appealing group of what I can only describe to 'er indoors as 'nutters', all dressed in yellow... and they kept capturing my attention....and I read a little, and dreamed a little, read a bit more, dreamed a bit more.... and looked at a dozen road bikes on line.....and..... ah sh*t..... you all know how the rest of the story goes....
So... as I can't think of 10 reasons why not.... and after reading the stories of 'pirates wanabees' that have passed before (such as Kittenkat) and their magnificent, painful, blistered graduations into full fledged pirates..... I suppose i'd better have a go...
I'm only now being practical....i'll leave it until the latter part of the season.... and will go for the Vitruvian.... as its close to home, and a sensible distance.....
bloody hell....listen to me.... up until last month i've been a walking advert for a lifestyle aimed at maximum damage and early termination.... and i'm now describing an 'effin triathlon as 'sensible'.......
See you out there..... I promise to try my best not to die on the course and show up that lovely yellow outfit......

you'll need one of these - Bike
Numptiness can be measured in inverse proportion to kit value!
'fank u!
I should also point out as part of my official pirate application process that I already have a commitment to a half marathon 2 weeks after the Vitruvian..... which will be my first race of any kind, whether it be running, swimming, cycling or a combination... well thats not completely true I suppose... my last official race was the 100m in year 6 at junior school and i'm now 41, so perhaps I can be excused the lapse in memory.... (although I do believe that I performed well at the time)
This kind of completely irresponsible scheduling would seem to be a good advert for my suitability....
Oh good..... I do enjoy a beer..... ... only downside is that I do need to pee a lot after a pint or two... and wetsuits stink after you've widdled in 'em....
Pies.... erm.... not a chance.... far too unhealthy for me.... i'm a paragon of virtue...
so glad its not an official club.... i'd never get in if it was.....
Fantastic.... i'll study it with care!
Time for me to go to bed, and dream through my bike budget strategy with She Who Must Be Obeyed, (or SWMBO for short).... perhaps a spot of bathroom redecorating will be in order as a softening up exercise.....
morning MC......
I hope that now taht your sober in the morning you haven't changed your mind
and swimming in your wetsuit is a must.......I managed it about 7 times in the IM
Seren oh never mind..........
MC - welcome and good luck.
Waff
Now...suckered in? check
How difficult can it be attitude? Check
Beer? check
welcome aboard
Now all you need to work on is the '1/2IM is a bit short' attitude
brilliant that you are going for the tris Magna. FFS -never touch them cigs again -40 years on them would stop all your great ambitions i can tell you.
good luck!!
Whats worse, is that you'll be able to track every metre I run, swim or cyle because i'm using Runkeeper...
My efforts here
I guess that i'd better get training!
Runsaturday looks very good!
I'm sticking with Runkeeper though as it lets me use my iPhone, so only one device being carried with me... and I can't afford a decent bike AND a Garmin unit!
urm...
i've realised that i'm away for all of Aug, and will have limited ability to train that whole month... perhaps a bit of running will be poss, but certainly no bike.... so, given that Vitruvian is on 6th Sep, will this make the ultimate taper, or should I pick another event?
Sounds like the ideal taper to me MC, I'm sure you'd be able to tick over a bit whilst away though?
Like the sound of what you're tackling here.....you'll be fine & best of luck
OK....
I'm on a boat all month, so hard to cycle .... although could probably run.....
so sod it.... lets go for it anyway.... its the only thing that would be appropriate given i'm doing this as a pirate!
Besides... i'll be doing the GNR 2 weeks later, so thats already a bit daft, and two daft things must be better than one.....
PS.... got a green light from the guvnor this evening for the bike budget i've got in mind....
welcome......
you know of course that the outlaw is still open......???? I' was also planning the vit with the missus!
I keep saying triblogs is really good for planning..... (and ok for entering summary details...) Takes a bit of gettibng used to but I like it lots now.....
I can't do Outlaw (its while i'm away in Aug), otherwise it would have been my first choice... it means that my full distance event will have to wait until early the next year....
EDIT: Just read that back, and i'm sitting here p*ssing myself laughing.... listen to me.... last month I was the bloke who stared at the ground when they looked for volunteers for running the touchline at an 11yr olds footy match because I knew that one length of the pitch and i'd hardly be able to breath or walk, let alone referee a footy match.... and now i'm talking about a frigging full distance event.... WTF am I doing?......
thats it - you have shown all the required traits of a (proto) pirate. There is no escape now......
(I was there 6 months ago!)
I'll be blogging the experience too......
Blog
Welcome, good luck, and well done on quitting smoking!
I stopped just over 5 years ago, and though I still have wussy lungs, it was such a good decision, and besides, you'll need all that money you used to spend on ciggies to buy tri toys.....
