With the races that have the more credible claims, e.g Viking Way, Lakeland 100, Hardmoors 110, the organisers generally don't say that their event is the toughest single stage race in the U.K.
They are more likely to let the DNF rate do the talking.
I did man v horse yesterday and it was the toughest race I've ever done. Over 3000 ft of assent with mud, river beds, shale and slurry with horses snorting past was mentally and physically knackering..... Even the downhills are hard as they are generally lethal!
