Soreen is the absolute dogs swingers. I've tried a few pretenders to the crown but they are hopeless wannabes.
Soreen also do a toasting loaf - that's mega. All the sugars caramlise when you toast it. It's stupendous.
I've been meaning to try and make my own Malt Loaf for some time. I need to find malt extract though, not something your average supermarket seems to stock.

Holland and Barrett is your best bet. Or, alternatively, try a home brewing shop.
Cheers Pudge. There is a H+B in my local town actually. I might bob there, get the extract, make some and then post the (almost certainly crap looking) results on this thread
Now, I love this stuff and know of its magical properties.
I have a rather hilly marathon coming up, looking at being out for perhaps 5 hours. Would gobbling some of this bad boy down DURING the race be beneficial? Or strictly before and after?
Try it during a training run and see how you go. Might be a bit heavy mid-race but you never know. I love the stuff, although reading all this makes me realise just how long it's been since I've had any! Must correct the situation...
As a marmite / cheese / vinegary sort of non sweet toothed person - sugary anything during or after a run actually makes me sick - a friend suggested malt loaf (quite rightly specifying Soreen) and I'm a total convert!
I like malt loaf, never tried the banana flavour one so might give it a go. Nakd bars are also good and easier to eat on the go than malt loaf - and they do a banana flavour as well - easy to carry etc.
Tried the individual malt loaf bars but they weren't as good as a sliced loaf or whole loaf really hard to eat even when not running!
Another malt loaf fan..........in fact after reading this I,m now craving the stuff.Once you start on one you can,t stop till the whole loaf is gone !!..........Anyone tried the new toastable version of soreen ??.............it got stuck in the toaster!!....but was very nice and chewy.Love mine with butter on , a fab post run snack with a big mug of tea ...............
Shhhh! If you're not careful they'll rebrand it as sports nutrition and whack the price up.
It's bloody ace though. The banana one is good to alternate with if you're eating stacks of the stuff to carb load. Good to throw in a rucksack too if you're out and about as it doesn't matter if it gets squashed.
I add lots of candied papaya for quick release carbs and the bran gives plenty of slow release energy and helps avoid insulin spikes and sudden crashes. Tastes good too
Hi @Daisyjess - do you have a recipe for vegan malt loaf? I have one (see above) but I would like to collect more. My one is more a 'bran loaf' than one with a malt flavour.

Or you could post us all a slice to test........................
I have a battle to keep hubby and kids from eating "Mummy's running cake". Soreen is the one and only.
What about the banana one? Even better
The banana one is a real disappointment, IMHO.
i fucking love soreen.

Some sort of runners mass murder/suicide event?

I've heard good things about the banana malt loaf, and it powered my club mate to a 2:17 in London on Sunday!
Blimey - wouldnt have thought you would have time to chew through maltloaf whilst running that quick. That there is skill.

The individual ones are ok if you've got half-a-dozen of 'em.
I think a chocolate one came out this week?

Why malt loaf? One word: YUM.
I can eat it as a vegan (probably depends on the brand you get), it's filling, it's yummy, and it's cheap. And if I had the time, I could make my own.

Often snack of choice with a cuppa after a run. Marathon carb loading it is a godsend.
Herbifit - do you use a 2lb loaf tin? Also would dates work? All bran as in the long stick like stuff???? Looks good though - will try it this week.
nomeatathlete.com has good recipes for veggies/vegans if anyone is interested as well. American based but good website.
I read in a scientific paper recently that raisins were as good as gels, so malt loaf should be pretty good.
