Hi guys just looking towards next year as to what events I fancy. Very wishful thinking was the Transvulcania as mentioned by somebody on another thread or the Eco Trail De Paris. However realistically speaking I don't think I am going to be able to splash the cash, plus the thought of doing all that by myself doesn't fill me with joy. So I was thinking what one big event could I aim for next year in the UK.
I live in the south west but that doesn't limit me with travelling. I don't mind a single day event but 100k max. But I quite fancy trying a multiday of perhaps 2 or 3 days.
I was wondering what are the top multi events in this country?

Watched the Transvulacania the last two times on Eurosport. Looks amazing. But of course really, really tough. As you would expect. Would love to do that one.
Well it just could be incorporated in to a weeks holiday and whe arriving mention to the wife that I am popping out for a run But looking at the ascent it goes up and up for 3/4s of the race then drops all the way back to sea level. My little legs would die
Loads to choose from. Have a look here.

Yeah I use that website quite often. But I was more wondering what peoples personal experiences were. Or what is known for being a really top race
One person's must-do is another's never-consider, 24 hours around a 400m track us some people's irresistible challenge. Do you want mountains, scenery, potential pubs, crowd support, road, trail, super tough or beginner friendly, etc, etc. The internet is there as a research tool.
I'd strongly suggest running the English Channel
Ouch
'Must do' is very subjective, what I love in an ultra you might hate.
Why not wait until you complete your canal run, then you'll know which of your experiences you preferred, and be better equipped to choose your next.
Our you could just sign up for the Lakeland 100 when registration opens
Too much?
Probably WAYtoo short and popular but the GNR is an event I love. Event being the operative word!
I always thought it would be nice to set a county challenge where you run a 10k / half / Mara in every county in the British isles
A must do for me is the Roseland August Trail on the south Cornish coast only because that was where I was brought up.
OK Vicar
When I was at the equivalent stage to you, I hadn’t really worked out what type of events I liked, but I had a lot of fun finding out. Of course I could make a long string of recommendations for you, but I would suggest a bit more experimentation first.
You build up a trust with certain race organisers, and then you are more likely to do their events. The main factor that influences me however, and I think most people here is that certain courses pique their interest.
You have done a hilly 30 miler as your firs ultra, and have signed up for a 50 mile towpath race which will allow you to experience something completely different. Possible projects for 2014 could include a coastal path race, an LDWA event, a mountain event, and event based on a national trail.
Just reading threads on this site you might find that some events grasp your interest, and in that case you might as well throw the dice.
tut . uncle Lirish...
Croydon Park Run.
hows u spen?
fandabbydozy
Running the English channel.....only if you join me to show how its done
Thanks Ben for being reasonable. I was just thinking if Britain had any races that people would think of straight away. IE when thinking of USA first thing that pops in to my head is Western States or perhaps Leadville.
Sorry used to live near Croydon and not even a park run would get me to go back
id wholly recommend any Centurion events Vicar
Do they do the Thames path?
Centurion do the Thames Path 100, but Go Beyond do the Thames Trot, which is the analogous 50 mile event. If you fancy trying a 50 mile event by Centurion, then I could suggest the South Downs Way 50 or the North Downs Way 50, both spectacular courses. You could do worse than try to schedule a Centurion event and a Go Beyond event next year.
You mentioned Western States 100 as the iconic American event, but it is almost impossible to get into, and some say over commercialised. I spoke to an American ultra runner who had done over a hundred 100 mile races, and he suggested that I might be better trying to get a place in the Bighorn 100 or Old Dominion.
Centurtion and Go Beyond are the best ones ive done by a mile. They go that little extra to look after you.
Ultra Brecon 40 Summer edition. Or any Might Contain Nuts race.
The UB40 is hard as nails with views to die for. Trail running heaven.
Ah fuckit if all you buggers are taking this seriously.
Centurion running events. Any one of them. Very well organised, iconic trails.
Go Beyond. Good people, profits go to charity.
Mightcontainnuts. Minamilist events, don't go if you like to be molly coddled, bastard tough courses
Highland Fling, Devil O'the Highlands, West Highland Way. Shut up, just do them
People talk of the TP100, GUCR, TT50 and other flat races, if that's your thing then right there you have a 50, a 100 and a 145, go nuts. I'd rather take an angle grinder to my nuts than do a flat race
Ahh whats up with you? Roll out your bed the wrong side. Or is it the lack of running?
Not sure i'd like to witness you angle grinding your veg though.
I know you enjoyed GUCR so much you were considering it at the end
You know as well as I do the only reason I was pushing you so hard at GUCR was that I was so feckin bored of the canal path I just wanted to finish
The only reason I dragged it out was to piss you off..
I should have kicked the other leg
