Don't get hung up on any magazine plan. Take the bits that suit your lifestyle and fit them round you.we all have different commitments and work patterns.

Train with a friend but run the race at your pace - I left my friend after 17 miles at her pace and finished 30mins quicker than she did....although it may have helped me not hit the wall too hard!
The Grinch - sometimes people think too deep into things instead of looking for obvious. At end of day if you don't enjoy running why do it - tact is to get people enjoying from start

The Grinch: When I started running. I would at times run my easy days too fast. 'Stupid Boy !' as Capt Mainwaring would have said in 'Dads Army'.
The new version of your favourite shoe can often be purely comsmetic.eg Colour changes.
Then last years shoe model can often be found with say £20 or more off the price,
"Dont pull up your potatoes every 5 minutes to see if they are growing"
(ie dont do all your training runs at 'fast' pace, or race too much)
totally agree - and I wish I'd started going to parkruns earlier
I see there was a page dedicated to this same question in the Trail Runner magazine this month. Most of the answers were utter tosh.
